Thailand
Thailand held a general election on May 14, 2023. The reformist Move Forward Party (MFP) won the largest number of seats, but the military-appointed Senate led efforts that effectively blocked it from taking power. The MFP has since been facing possible dissolution and prosecution for proposing amendments to Thailand’s draconian “insulting the monarchy” law—an act that the Constitutional Court said amounts to treason. The new government of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has not undertaken significant reforms to address human rights problems. Authorities continue to restrict fundamental rights—particularly freedom of expression and peaceful assembly—and prosecute human rights and democracy activists, community advocates, environmental defenders, and critics of the monarchy. Impunity for abuses, particularly in the conflict-affected south, continues unabated. Refugees and asylum seekers remain at risk of arrest and deportation.
