Winters Farm to School (WF2S) was founded in 2011 by community members who recognized a need to reconnect local children to the land, champion agriculture within the community, and boost our children's long-term health by supporting school meal programs which serve healthier, locally grown foods. Winters is a small town with a history deeply rooted in agriculture. Surrounded by working family farms, we wanted our children to be able to taste and benefit from the rich bounty of foods grown in this region. We also wanted to address the serious issue of food scarcity within Yolo County, where one in four children do not have enough to eat on a daily basis.

Our vision is to bring together farmers, families, local businesses and community members to ensure that every child in the Winters Joint Unified School District has enough food to eat, and that the food provided at school will promote the health and well-being of every child.

Funds raised will help grow our primary Farm to School programs, including:

- Procurement of locally grown, seasonal foods for meals prepared and served in our schools;

- Support low-income families with younger, preschool-aged children that do not qualify for the free and reduced federal program;

- Growing and maintaining the student learning gardens at Waggoner and Rominger Schools;

- Support for our Kids Farmer's Markets where children take home an average of 10-15 pounds of food per week (due to COVID-19, our Kids Farmer's Market is currently on hold); and

- Provide students with the opportunity to visit a local farm, learn about where their food comes from and how it is grown.

Mission

Our mission has three interrelated emphases:

- To raise funds to provide fresh, local produce, fruits and nuts for our children's school food program

- To educate children about the positive, long-term health benefits of healthy eating habits

- To reconnect children to the rich, deeply rooted agricultural heritage in the community
