Proposed instructional materials available for review at HMW

The Houston Independent School District is participating in the instructional materials adoption process this year as part of the TEA’s Proclamation 2019, joining other school districts around the state in selecting materials for classrooms that will be used over the next eight years.

Instructional materials available for review include the following subjects.

  • English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR), grades K–8
  • Spanish Language Arts and Reading (SLAR), grades K–6
  • Spelling (English and Spanish), grades 1–6
  • Handwriting (English and Spanish), grades K–5
  • English Learners Language Arts, grades 7–8
  • Personal Financial Literacy (PFL), high school

Materials recommended by the district’s Instructional Materials Allotment Team (IMAT) and adopted by the HISD Board of Trustees early next spring will be available for use in schools starting in the 2019-2020 school year.

Community input: The public is invited to examine materials submitted by publishers for adoption consideration during the two weeks from Oct. 15 to 26 at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center (4400 W. 18th St., 77092). The public can also review the materials online at: http://tea4avcastro.tea.state.tx.us/imet/agreement.html. A district survey to collect public feedback is posted at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Proclamation2019.

School-level input: Some publishers have chosen to provide samples of their materials to district schools for your staff to review. You may keep any samples received. Schools are welcome to organize a committee of campus instructional personnel and community members to review instructional materials under consideration for adoption. In addition to any samples received, online components of instructional materials submitted for adoption are available at: http://tea4avcastro.tea.state.tx.us/imet/agreement.html. Also, a set of the materials is on public display at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, 4400 W. 18th St., through Oct. 26 for schools and community members. An online survey to collect both campus and community feedback is now open at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Proclamation2019.

District-level input: Teachers nominated by principals to serve on the district review committees will start their formal reviews of the proposed materials at a full day of publisher hearings on Monday, Oct. 29. The teacher committees will continue their evaluations during November and December. Committee members will review materials for alignment to standards, quality, accuracy, balance, support for all student groups, and fit with district programs and requirements. They will also consider input from any campus instructional materials review committees, parents and other community members, and district departments. The district committees’ prioritized and documented recommendations will be forwarded to the district IMAT for its final reviews and recommendations to the Board of Trustees.
