In January 2015, we brought home our precious 2-year-old daughter Ashby from China. She was born with Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS), a rare vascular malformation condition involving blood and lymph vessels, present in her upper chest, back and then down her right arm and into her hand. We had no idea where to start seeking a proper diagnosis, treatment or how it would affect the rest of her life, but so many wonderful people pointed us in the direction of Scottish Rite for Children. It was there that we met hand surgeon Dr. Scott Oishi who helped us form a plan to ensure Ashby lives the healthiest and fullest life possible.

Dr. Oishi was the surgeon who operated on Ashby for the first time in October 2015, and then last year in September 2020, he was also the surgeon for her 22nd operation treating her KTS.

Dr. Oishi’s more than just a brilliant surgeon, he is first and foremost a pediatrician. His love for his patients is evident in the amount of time he takes during each appointment, the facts and tidbits he always remembers about our daughter’s life and the numerous times he’s called us after hours and on weekends to check on our girl.

He and his team have not only helped Ashby have more mobility in her right arm and hand, but they have also absolutely saved her life with their medical interventions by preventing and removing clots and aneurysms.

When we first met with Dr. Oishi, Ashby could not even make a fist with her right hand due to the vascular malformation, and now today, she’s a very active third grader who loves soccer, cheer, working on complicated math problems, reading, riding her bike, playing with her dogs and every other activity a busy 9-year-old loves to do.

During her last surgery, Dr. Oishi asked Ashby if there was any special design she wanted on her cast for when she came out of the operation, and she said “a Halloween cast.” Knowing his own art limitations, Dr. Oishi asked another surgeon who was more artsy to scrub in so that Ashby would wake up with the cast she wanted. This is the kind of care and attention to detail all of the providers show their patients at Scottish Rite. We are so thankful for Dr. Oishi’s wisdom and intervention in Ashby’s medical needs. He has enlisted a team of wonderful physicians in a variety of specialties to ensure she lives a long, happy and healthy life. We would love to invite you make a gift to Scottish Rite for Children that helps give thousands of children, like our sweet Ashby, back their childhood. We love to see Ashby doing what she loves, and our family is forever grateful to Dr. Oishi and Scottish Rite for Children.
