Opportunities for All District 5010 Rotarians
One of the great opportunities in Rotary that sometimes doesn't get much fanfare is leadership training and hands on leadership experience. It usually starts in the club and depending on the size of your club the opportunities might come very soon after joining.

Palmer Club and Malawi and Paul Harris Fellow
if you are subscribed to the Malawi Children's Village blog...but in case you're not I knew you'd be interested in this highlight! The Paul Harris points were contributed by Stacie on behalf of the Palmer Club. I know Felix was particularly honored and pleased with being recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow...this blog obviously demonstrates such as well. It is so rewarding putting a name and face together with personally meeting and experiencing Felix's warm friendship and smile as clearly shown in his picture!
MCV Director Felix Chirombo
In Felix Chirombo's office at MCV, one wall is covered with banners from Rotary clubs that have collaborated with MCV for more than 15 years. Among them is longtime partner, the Rotary Club of Palmer Alaska.
Recently, Palmer Rotarians recognized Felix's contributions to MCV by naming him a Paul Harris Fellow of The Rotary Foundation. Paul Harris Fellows are recognized for their service in making a difference in the world. As Executive Director of MCV, Felix has been an example of the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self." Congratulations to Felix for this well-deserved recognition, and for his ongoing efforts for the children of Malawi.

Anchorage International Rotary Club.
The first event is from November
Thank You to the King Career Center for treating AI Rotary to an amazing luncheon on the Friday before Thanksgiving. We met at KCC for our regular meeting for our annual pie auction to support the AIRC Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Great turnout, bidding, fundraising, and just plain fun! KCC students were involved in every aspect, from preparing and serving the meal, creating and donating auction items, helping carry auction items, making flower arrangements to sell, and being an amazing host to an amazing annual event. Thank you to all the volunteers who worked hard to make the annual pie auction a meaningful fundraiser for KCC students. Boyd Morgenthaler led the charge before handing it off to auctioneers Leverette Hoover and Jay Tung. They certainly have a knack for getting the highest bids. Leverette was so hot we had to have KCC student fire fighters on hand just in case. Cathie Straub, Jan Ingram, and 2015 scholarship recipient Kylie Glidden were auctioneer helpers. Kylie is majoring in welding technology at UAA and we were proud to receive her support for our program and KCC. And best of all, were the AIR members and guests who bid often and bid high! This year's auction set a new all time record, bringing in over $17,000!
The second event was our annual bell ringing for the Salvation Army (this goes with the bell ringing collage):
Tis the season for bell ringing and in honor of the late Jerry Budd, the AI Rotary Club was out in full force to ring the bells last Saturday. Thank you to AI member Toni Holmes for organizing this amazing group of service-above-self-Rotarians and their families. The AI Rotary club staffed 5 doors across three grocery stores, braving the cold for the annual ringing of the bell for Salvation Army. Thank you to all the wonderful members who participated. Families turned out together all for a great cause and a tribute to Jerry Budd, who organized this event for years.
Everyone was dressed for the spirit of the season with Santa hats, robes, even wigs. Member extraordinaire Nina Mann raced between the stores delivering coffee to help keep everyone warm.
The third event was the Jingle Run (the jingle run collage):
Check out this hardy group of AI Rotarians braving the cold at the Jingle Bell Run last Saturday!
The Arthritis Foundation's Jingle Bell Run is a fun way to get out, get moving and raise funds and awareness to cure arthritis. Thanks to Bob Huston and Stellar Designs, our Rotary group is wearing their holiday-themed shirts. Can't tell if they tied jingle bells to their shoelaces, but we can be sure they were spreading smiles, good cheer and holiday spirit. Anchorage International Rotary definitely has spirit!

Members of the Anchorage and Mat-Su clubs - Clark Middle School
Members of the Anchorage and Mat-Su clubs participated in the roll-out of a potential District-wide project. With members agreeing that financial literacy was a need for young students, Ross Johnston worked with Junior Achievement to train and organize several classes at Clark Middle School in Anchorage. Rotary Club members each led a class in a six week program
where the students learned about saving, budgeting, credit cards and loans.
The program can be adapted to middle school as well as high school. For
more information, please contact LaMarr Anderson of the Palmer Club.

The Alaska Chapter of the International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians
Check out the IFFR Americas Newsletter
The Alaska Chapter of the International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians
(IFFR) is hosting a Fly-In for Rotarians and their families to share in the fun and excitement of the 2017 Fur Rendezvous and Iditarod Sled Dog Race. These
visitors who are aviation enthusiasts will be converging on Anchorage from
across the globe starting in late February for the start of Fur Rondy and will
be enjoying Alaskan hospitality at least through the Iditarod Restart in Willow
on March 5th. The preliminary details which we are providing to the potential
attendees for planning purposes are as follows:
The current information on hotels from which the attendees can pick and
choose may be seen at:
Visitors who fly in may wish to rent a car, but that won't be necessary as we
will provide ground transportation via two 4WD vans as needed to all scheduled
events (see attached photo.) This period is one of the the most significant
Alaskan tourist draws for the entire year, so hotel and airfield accommodations
need to be locked in as soon as possible.

ShelterBox
Dear Rotarian or Rotary Club
I am writing to you today to tell you about the ShelterBox USA HERO program. I am the Alaska Ambassador for ShelterBox USA and a member of District 5010 eClub. In that capacity I volunteer my time to speak to Rotary Clubs and other groups about the great work that we do.
In 2012 ShelterBox became Rotary International's first and only disaster relief Global Project Partner. What does that mean? As Rotarians we are dedicated to Service Above Self and are always looking for opportunities to serve. During a disaster we want to act.
At ShelterBox USA we like to say that we are preparing every day for the worst day ever. We want to be proactive not reactive and to do this we need your support. The HERO program is a sustained giving program where a club can pledge to give $1,000, $2,000, or $3,000 annually for three years. This program shows your club's dedication to give those in need the shelter, warmth, and dignity they so desperately deserve.
For more information and to have me come to your club please feel free to contact me:
Nancy H. Dodge
941 9934335 nhdodge@comcast.net Eagle River, Alaska 99577 Thank you for your commitment to be the change you want to see in this world. Sincerely,
Nancy Dodge
