These Ohio Companies Announced Mass Layoffs In November

Nearly 200 Ohio workers will work their final day for their company on New Year's Eve.

CLEVELAND — Two major Ohio companies announced layoffs and furloughs in November.

The Progressive Casualty Insurance Program in Mayfield is eliminating its commercial auto insurance procedure group, and laying off 76 people in the process. All employees will have their final day of work on New Year's Eve, according to the letter filed with the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services.

First Transit in Columbus is laying off 114 employees. The firm lost the Central Ohio Transit Authority contract, according to its letter to ODJFS, and now expects to close its Columbus facility. All employees will have their last day on New Year's Eve.

Here are the two companies announcing layoffs:

  • Progressive — 76 employees
  • First Transit — 114 employees

News of mass layoffs come as traditional unemployment claims dip in Ohio, but the state's unemployment rate (5.1 percent) remains higher than the national average (4.6 percent). Ohio's labor force participation rate is also slightly lower than the national average, 61.2 percent versus 61.6 percent.

  • Creative Extruded Products in Tipp City — 165 impacted employees
  • BTA Enterprises in Dayton — 78 employees
  • Kellogg Company in Cincinnati — 73 employees
  • Marriott Hotel Services in Cleveland — 109 employees
