I am a human geographer Interested in housing, urban policy, and democracy with an East Asia focus. Born as an idealist with a naive belief that people should be able to enhance their well-being in their ways, I developed my research interest in urban policy/politics, through which people could decide how to use their space and how to live. However, being an idealist is not enough. Many years of academic training cultivate my interest in theory but also lead me to further explore how theory is produced, practiced, and could be used to improve people's lives. With my past experiences of working with NGOs that focus on housing and land issues in Taiwan (OURs, SHAC), I am developing a research project that mainly adopts participant observation in an urban renewal process. Through investigating how different actors – community residents, NGO workers, and government officials – engage in this experimental project, I hope to explore the emerging approaches toward a democratic and transformative urban future.
