The Man in Room 121                                By Dick Duerksen

The man in room 121 is 29 and battling a rare liver disease. He is nauseated much of the time and the medications have put much of his life out of focus. He speaks seldom, and then only in a whisper.

As a housekeeper stirs about his room, he suddenly turns and speaks to her clearly.

“I smell bread baking. Fresh bread baking, and that’s the best smell on earth!”

Surprised, the housekeeper sniffs the air—and smells nothing out of the ordinary. No bread baking, just “hospital.”

“When the bread is ready,” Will asks, “may I have a slice? A big thick slice with butter!”

“Let me check with your nurse,” the housekeeper answers as she slips out the door.

It took approvals from Will’s doctor, nurse, dietician and wife, but soon the floor’s bread maker was in full gear and the “best smell on earth” filled the unit.

That evening there was a party in Will’s room. His wife, several nurses, a housekeeper, and Will’s doctor all sat around the bed sharing hot bread, thick butter, and stories of home.

Will loved it!
