Redwood Adventist Academy burns in fast moving wildfire


On Oct. 9, the Tubbs Fire swept into the Larkfield-Wikiup area of Santa Rosa and destroyed Redwood Adventist Academy, located on Mark West Springs Road. No students or faculty were on campus at the time. A nearby public school, Hidden Valley Satellite, shopping centers, homes, and historical landmarks suffered the same fate. The news of the school’s destruction spread through social media and word-of-mouth to shocked teachers, parents, and students. WWU Selects New Campus Chaplain


Walla Walla University (WWU) has selected a new lead campus chaplain. Albert Handal will join the WWU Campus Ministries team in January 2018. Handal is currently the pastor for young adults at the Keene Church, on the campus of Southwestern Adventist University, in Keene, Texas. Albert and his wife, Allison, and 6-month old son, Edward, are excited soon be a part of the WWU family.

Around Glacier Peak, part 2

We have all watched the opening scene of The Sound of Music with Maria spinning and singing. The bad news is that we cannot sing like her. The good news is that we do not need to go to Austria for mountains like that. A hike to the flanks of Glacier Peak puts us in the midst of Sound of Music country. That is where I spent the next two days of my hike last summer.

Brenda Duerksen (Dick) – is no longer working for the OR Conf. as a health services/ACS field coordinator.

Blake Engelhart (Jennifer) – has left his pastoral role at Journey Church to attend seminary at Andrews U. 

Jonathan Stephan (Cynthia) – has left his pastoral role at Meadow Glade Church to Michigan attend seminary at Andrews University.

Douglas McGinnis (Tamma-lynn) – is the new Oregon Conference Education fundraiser.

Dave Merino (Sandra) – has transitioned from pastoring the Woodburn Spanish Church to the Southern California Conference. 

Rick New (Cheryl) – has transitioned from his role as pastor of Oasis Christian Center to Journey Church in the Kelso-Longview area.

Evan Davies (Lilia) – a recent Walla Walla University grad, is the new intern pastor at Journey Church in the Kelso-Longview area. 

Garth Dottin (Melainie) – has joined the OR Conference from the Ontario to pastor the Sharon congregation.

Walter Mancia (Laura) – has transitioned from pastoring for the Ashland and Valley View Churches to Tenn. 

Alex Portillo (Chelsea) – from Ontario Conference, will be attending seminary at Andrews University.

Cynthia Villegas – is has joined the Oregon Conference office staff as part-time administrative assistant for the Education department. 

John Wesslen (Karen) – has retired from pastoring the Orchards and Yacolt churches.

Ryan Whitehead (Bridget) – has joined the Oregon Conference from Washington to be the associate pastor at the Adventist Community Church of Vancouver.

Joanna Wart – has transitioned from her role as community outreach coordinator for the Oregon Conference Education department to California. 

Kilikina Vega (Brandon) – has moved from Milo Adventist Academy to be head teacher at Sutherlin Adventist Christian School. 

Charles Byrd (Karen) – has come from the Kentucky-Tennessee Conference to pastor the Grants Pass Church.

James Wibberding (Laura) – has transitioned from his role as pastor of the Journey Church to teach at Pacific Union College in Calif. 

Arthur Ordelheide – has transitioned from his role at Big Lake Youth Camp to the Washington Conference. 

Bethany Edmundson (Erik) – has stepped into the role of principal/teacher at Journey Christian School.
