Served by Servants                                             By Dick Duerksen

Last Sabbath, November 11, included a Veteran’s Day Recognition in most Adventist churches across the USA.

In Tillamook, Oregon, there was a special flag bouquet in the lobby, a memorial plaque on the wall, and the worship service celebrated the work church members have done as members of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard.

The sermon, by Rear Admiral, and Seventh-day Adventist Pastor, Darold Bigger focused on the power of forgiveness and a brass trio played songs of victory.

After the service, I asked Dallas Pfeiffer and Larry Stephens to pose beside the lobby flag. Dallas spent his tour of duty in the “White Coats,” where he joined many others assisting physicians discover better ways to treat illness and wounds in the military. Larry helped support Marines at a base near San Diego. Both learned the value of service for others while in the military, and have maintained that lifestyle since discharge.

Dallas, (on the left), has participated in numerous mission trips with his wife, Gloria. They have located and assembled the props for the Oregon Conference children’s evangelism programs, helped re-wire the Gladstone Park Campground RV hook-ups, and helped build the new Adventist church in Seaside.

Larry and his family are equally involved in service, especially for people born with disabilities, and those who have minimal family support, or are homeless.

When the Tillamook church decided to provide laundry and showers for folks who are homeless in the Tillamook area, Larry designed the facility and did much of the construction work.

As the homeless care center plans came together, Tim Mayne, Tillamook pastor, asked Larry, “Why do you want to use such fine materials to make the bathrooms, showers, and waiting areas so nice?”

“I could never offer them something that is ‘just better’ than they have now,” Larry answered. “These people deserve the same quality I would want in my own home.”

So it is that people who are homeless in the Tillamook community do their laundry and take showers every Tuesday at the Seventh-day Adventist church. Served, by servants.
