2023 - Vargas appeared iin 47 games for the Lions starting in 44 as an outfielder ... Finished the season with a .406 average, 58 hits, 143 at-bats, 41 runs scored, three doubles, two triples, two home runs, 11 RBIs, 18 walks drawn, stealing 36 bases in 37 attempts (97.3%) with a .497 slugging percentage and .476 on-base percentage for a .973 OPS ... Defensively she recorded 82 putouts, eight assists and helped turn one double play ... Among program junior ranks Vargas finished second in stolen bases and stolen base attempts, fourth in batting average (min 95 ABs), tied for fifth in runs scored, eighth in hits, ninth in OPS and T-10th in walks.
2022 - Vargas appeared and started in 50 games for the Lions in the outfield... Finished the season with 152 at bats, 46 runs scored, 52 hits, seven doubles, six triples, two ome runs, 15 RBIs while slugging .507 and having a .408 on base percentage and stole 23 bases in 30 attempts... Moved into 6th in career stolen bases with 54 in her career and had her 100th career hit against #5 Central Oklahoma (March. 6) in the MIAA Tournament.
2021 - Vargas appeared and started in 45 games for the Lions at left field and as the leadoff hitter ... Finished the season with a .308 batting average, 48 hits, four doubles, 34 runs scored, went 31-33 (5th in Division II, 1st in MIAA) in stolen bases attempts and had 94 putouts and three assists ... Had four stolen bases against Lincoln (Apr. 17th) in the Lions 12-4 win ... tied a school record with four runs scored against Missouri S&T (Feb. 27th) in the Lions 16-8 win and stole three bases in the game as well ... Had another three stolen base game against Bemidji State (Mar. 20th) in the Lions 11-2 sixth inning win ... In one weekend Apr. 17th - 18th stole eight bases, six versus Lincoln and two versus Central Missouri ... Nationally ranked 18th in stolen bases per game (0.69) and led the MIAA in that category and her 31 stolen bases ranked first among all freshman in Division II ... Named honorable mention All-MIAA as an outfielder ... Part of the Lions team that was in Division II, second in triples (24), ninth in triples per game (0.52), 14th in double plays turned (17), hit-by-pitches (42) and stolen bases (99). Finished 23rd in stolen bases per game (2.15), 29th in sacrifice bunts (32), 41st in double plays turned per game (0.37) and 49th in win-loss percentage (0.663). In the MIAA the Lions ranked first in double plays turned, stolen bases per game, stolen bases, triples and triples per game, second in double plays turned per game, hit-by-pitches and sacrifice bunts. Ranked third in on-base percentage (0.366) and scoring average (4.91), fourth in runs scored (226) and win-loss percentage, sixth in ERA (3.27), hits (345) and WHIP (1.46).
Prior to Southern - Vargas prepped at Garden City High School ... While in High School Vargas played second base, shortstop and as a pitcher as she was a four-year letter winner ... As a freshman Vargas tied for the team lead in hits (39) and runs scored (44) while being named second-team 6A All-State and the Buffalo finished third in the state tournament ... Vargas was a three-time All-Western Athletic Conference player, being named Telegram's Softball/Baseball Player of the Year as a sophomore and being named second-team All-State for consecutive seasons after setting school records in batting average (.579), hits (44), runs scored (37), and triples (10) as a hitter while also registering a 5-1 record in the circle with 37 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.57.
Personal - Yazmin is the daughter of Yair and Yadira Vargas and intends on majoring in radiology during her time at Southern.
