Best Practices in working with LGBT older adults

This training event will award 1 contact hour for licensed Social Workers with the NYSED State Board for Social Work* and licensed Mental Health Counselors* and licensed Marriage and Family Therapists* with the State Board for Mental Health Practitioners  and 1 CASAC renewal credit.**

The LGBT Older Adult Experience will provide health and human service providers of staff levels on the community of individuals who comprise the LGBT older adult population. LGBT older adults (50 and older) often face myriad challenges in addition to those experienced by their heterosexual counterparts; in particular, social isolation, familial estrangement, increased health risks, and lack of culturally competent health and human services. This workshop will describe in depth the dynamic of the LGBT aging community and best practices for working with this population. A Q&A will close the session.

Trainer: Amy Angelone, LMSW, SAGE-LI/ LGBTQ Network. In her role as the SAGE-LI Program Coordinator, Amy Angelone coordinates and delivers social and supportive programming for LGBT older adults, as well as delivering community education and training services to increase awareness and cultural competency of older adult-serving providers to serve LGBTQ older adults.
