COMPRESSION ONLY CPR

l
Hands-only CPR calls for uninterrupted chest presses — 100 a minute — until paramedics take over or an automated external defibrillator is available to restore a normal heart rhythm.
This action should be taken only for adults who unexpectedly collapse, stop breathing and are unresponsive. The odds are that the person is having cardiac arrest — the heart suddenly stops — which can occur after a heart attack or be caused by other heart problems. In such a case, the victim still has ample air in the lungs and blood and compressions keep blood flowing to the brain, heart and other organs.
A child who collapses is more likely to primarily have breathing problems — and in that case, mouth-to-mouth breathing should be used. That also applies to adults who suffer lack of oxygen from a near-drowning, drug overdose, or carbon monoxide poisoning. In these cases, people need mouth-to-mouth to get air into their lungs and bloodstream.

NEW CPR GUIDELINES

Begin CPR with chest compressions: C-A-B: (Compression, Airway, Breathing)
Starting compressions first will provide sudden cardiac arrest victims with a better chance at survival by getting blood flowing to the brain faster. Studies over the last five years have shown that the A-B-C sequence can delay chest compressions, and delays to chest compressions reduce survival of sudden cardiac arrest. Rescuers will be trained to start CPR with compressions first.
Some of the other changes for Lay Rescuer and Professional Rescuer CPR include:
  • Compression Rate: Change the rate of compressions from 'approximately' 100 per minute to 'at least' 100 per minute
  • Compression depth:
    1. Change adult compression depth to 'at least 2 inches
    2. Change child/infant compression depth to 'at least 1/3 the depth of the chest'
  • 'Look, listen, and feel' removed from sequence
  • Cricoid pressure is no longer routinely recommended for use by Professional Rescuers/Healthcare Providers
There is no change to the compression to ventilation ratio of 30:2. Hands-only CPR is still recommended for non-trained or dispatcher-assisted rescuers providing adult CPR. The AED sequence has not changed. It does not appear that AEDs or AED trainers will need to be reprogrammed by the manufacturers.
There are also a few minor changes in first aid treatment that are more fully explained in our supplement.

THINGS THAT INHIBIT CPR

Physical limitations - enlist the help of others, do what you can.

Patient position - take time to position patient properly.

Liability - you are covered under the Good Samaritan Law

Disease - use gloves, mask, or do compression only CPR

Emotion - its hard, but try to focus on what you can do to save their life.

Tip of the Day

Something to think about; when one person is suffering from Sudden Cardiac Arrest every 90 seconds. It's time to start thinking about what can be done to save a life. Especially when there is a 95% mortality rate, when early treatment is not given. The answer is an AED, which gives people a 74% survival rate.

CPR ratio is 30 compressions to 2 breaths, but if you are concerned about doing mouth to mouth, at least do compression only CPR.

WORK, STORE, CHURCH, GYM EMERGENCIES

Being trained in CPR is the first step; but what about your co-workers, the people around you all day? What system does your work, grocery store, gym, or church have in place in case of an emergency?

Second Nature Safety is ready to take you to the next level with the plan and tools necessary to take action in times of emergency.

COFFEE or CPR

Many of us spend over $100 per month on coffee, which gets us wired and gives us bad breath. This month why not use half of that money to take a CPR class and learn to save a life?
Here are a few class options:
-Organize an office CPR class
-Do an in home CPR party with friends
-Job site class for construction workers
-Gift certificate for a friend or family member

AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR

The heart is an electrically stimulated muscle with a built in pacemaker. When this system fails, our greatest chance of survival is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). If you could greatly increase the chances of survival in someone having cardiac arrest, would you? The answer for all of us should be Yes. An (AED) increases survival rate from 30% with CPR, to 70%. CPR is a great lifesaving skill, but it is typically done to buy time for an AED. It makes sense to use an electrical device to stimulate the heart. Read the link from Mayo Clinic that gives more information on AED's and see if it is right for your home or workplace.

Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing an AED, need training, or need someone to manage an AED program.
