Summer Reading 2024

What’s going on at my public library this summer?
Even though our branches are closed for in-person programming at the moment, there are all kinds of fun, free programs going on at your NYC public libraries this summer: Virtual storytime, author events, book discussions, craft programs, music programs. Why is summer reading so important?
Summer reading combats “Summer Slide,” a phenomenon that affects children who stop reading over the summer. “Summer Slide” means that students actually lose some of the reading skills they gained during the school year and start the new school year behind where they finished the last. Active reading during summer months prevents summer slide.

Where can I find recommended books for kids?
The NYC Summer Reading booklists are made by librarians from the three public library systems (Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library, and Queens Public Library) and the Department of Education's School Library Services office.  Students will have a good chance of finding these books at the library because we have many copies available.
