Wolcott, N.Y. (WHAM) - State Police are investigating a crash that killed a 77-year-old man in Wolcott on Wednesday morning.

Troopers said they were called around 9:10 a.m. about a car colliding with a garbage truck on East Port Bay Road.

Police said Floyd Yonker of Wolcott, who was driving the car, crashed into the rear end of a parked garbage truck. There is no word on what may have happened leading up to the crash.

Peggy Finewood was on the way to the store, driving behind Yonker, when the crash happened.

"There was a gentleman in front of me and we saw the garbage truck on the side of the road, parked, picking up garbage, obviously," said Finewood. "I noticed the guy in front of me wasn't slowing down or breaking or moving over, and then it was just like a huge impact."

There was no one in the garbage truck at the time of the crash.

Yonker was taken to Newark-Wayne Hospital and was pronounced dead there.

State Police shut down East Port Bay Road between Furnace and Wheeler Roads for hours while they investigated.
