Woman, 79, killed by garbage truck that turned onto Parc Ave.: police

Montreal police say the victim was on the sidewalk when struck and was declared dead at the scene.

A 79-year-old woman died Tuesday morning after being struck by a private garbage truck near the intersection of Parc Ave. and St-Joseph Blvd. in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough.

The incident occurred at 8:40 a.m. when the truck, exiting an alley south of the intersection, turned north onto Parc Ave., police say.

Police say the victim was on the sidewalk when struck and was declared dead at the scene.

The 54-year-old truck driver was treated for nervous shock.

Plateau-Mont-Royal Mayor Luc Ferrandez said his borough may change the configuration of the corner where the woman was killed.

“We will analyze this intersection very, very precisely to know if something can be done,” he told reporters. “All options are on the table.”

He said the woman who died “was a courageous, active person and all our thoughts are going to the family.”
