An 83-year-old man was killed in a crash in the Mariposa area on Tuesday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said Wednesday.

Just after 1 p.m., CHP’s Merced Communications Center received a call of a two vehicle, head-on collision on Highway 49S north of Wass Road in Mariposa County.

Investigations found an man was driving a 1999 Volvo 3-Axle Refuse Compactor Truck, traveling northbound on Highway 49S north of Wass Road in a downhill straight-away approaching a sweeping right-hand curve.

The 83-year-old driver of a 2014 Subaru Forester was traveling southbound on Highway 49S north of Woodland Drive through a sweeping left-hand curve approaching the Volvo.

As the Subaru continued through the curve, for unknown reasons, the driver of the Subaru allowed the vehicle to swerve to the left, crossing the solid double yellow center line and colliding head-on with the Volvo, CHP said.

The driver of the Subaru was pronounced dead at the scene.

It does not appear alcohol nor drugs were a factor in this collision.
