Position Description

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) provides welcoming and safe opportunities to play, learn, contemplate and build community, while encouraging responsible stewardship of the land. We promote healthy people, a healthy environment, and strong communities.
SPR manages a 6,414-acre park system of over 485 parks and extensive natural areas. SPR provides athletic fields, tennis courts, play areas, specialty gardens, and more than 25 miles of boulevards and 120 miles of trails. The system comprises about 12% of the city's land area. SPR also manages 26 community centers, eight indoor swimming pools, two outdoor (summer) swimming pools, four environmental education centers, two small craft centers, four golf courses, an outdoor stadium, and much more.
The Parks and Environment Division of SPR presents an exceptional opportunity to work with a team of professionals dedicated to sustainability and environmental engagement within the department and throughout the communities we serve. 
As the Sustainability and Environmental Engagement Manager, you will lead the teams that drive diverse, relevant programming and the development of policies that support our unwavering commitment to promoting a healthy environment.

Position Description
The Sustainability and Environmental Engagement Manager reports to the division director and will manage SPR's Environmental Learning and Urban Food Systems along with the Sustainability and Environmental Engagement unit. It is responsible for a team of nine (9) staff and a budget of about $1.5 million.
The most competitive applicants will:

  • Have a in depth knowledge and experience in Environmental Education, Wildlife preservation or Integrated Pest Management
  • Be a people leader with demonstrated skills in planning, directing and overseeing the operations of a unit, division or department
  • Have technical knowledge and expertise in the Environment Advocacy and Sustainability fields
  • Display a track record in implementing healthy food systems and associated educational programming.
  • A background and experience in performance management and reporting performance metrics.
  • Be comfortable working cross divisionally and interdepartmentally with other policy leads regarding policy recommendations that have department and/or citywide impact and relevancy
  • Consciously create a workplace culture that is consistent with SPR's commitment to equity and inclusion
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead employees using the E3 Performance Management (Equity + Engagement + Expectations = E3) performance management and development tool or other experience in encouraging employee contribution, goal setting, and providing feedback

Job Responsibilities

  • Budget responsibility for citywide community environmental education and food systems programs environmental messaging delivered by staff and volunteers.
  • Overseeing Environmental Education Programs at both Discovery Park and Carkeek Park Learning Centers, be SPR's liaison and representative with Environmental Education Center Advisory Councils.
  • Planning, analysis and coordination of Environmental Education public information or related programs accountability for translating City and departmental objectives into specific outcomes in the areas of policy, programs, and service delivery in the areas of Sustainability, Environmental Education, and related programs.
  • Design, develop, update and implement policies, guidelines and best practices for the unit. management of the Environment Learning, Wildlife; Integrated Pest Management and Urban Food Systems (Urban Gardening/Farming).
  • Work with internal staff in the department's Planning and Development and Facilities Divisions.produce special programs and events and maintains community and governmental relations. 
  • Manage, monitor, evaluate, and report on the program services provided to the public by the Environment Learning Centers at Discovery Park and Carkeek, and the Urban Food Systems.
  • Research and develop new programming strategies and best business practices for our natural resources on Park land.
  • Supervise the Program Education Supervisor responsible for developing program curriculum and implementing program services at the Discovery Park and Carkeek Environmental Learning Centers, as well as the Program Education Specialist responsible for similar duties for the Urban Food System Program, and the Staff that manages the Integrated Pest Management and Wildlife policies and practices.
  • Make recommendations to the Division Director on policy changes and present updates to division senior management
  • Regularly provide written reports, status updates, and white papers to the Division Director and senior management regarding Environmental Education, Integrated Pest Management, and Urban food system issues.
  • Periodically work with the SPR Communications Manager in drafting correspondence, email responses, and briefing papers in response to public or elected official requests. There will be times when the position provides presentations to the SPR Executive Team, the Superintendent, Park Board, and Mayoral/City council members regarding Environment Education, Integrated Pest Management, and Urban food system issues.
  • Meet with advisory councils and special interest groups.
  • Work cross-divisionally and with other city department stakeholders on departmental and/or city-wide projects or initiatives related to Environmental Education, Wildlife, and Pest Management System issues.
  • Work collaboratively and successfully with a wide variety of department staff, citizens, and stakeholders; experience in developing and applying problem solving strategies.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Education, Horticulture, Botany, Biology, Urban Forestry, Urban Trails Management, Wildlife Management, or Business Administration.
  • In addition, a minimum of three years professional experience in any of the above fields, with a minimum of two years managing at least 6 employees related to the duties outlined above in a large multi-level public or private sector organization, experience facilitating diverse groups and their interests.
  • Direct experience supervising an Environmental Education; or Climate Change program; teaching a science program; teaching and/or managing fisheries, oceanography, or forestry program.
  • Work in forest trails management; landscape, tree, or urban forest management may substitute for education (Combinations of education, training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability).

Desired Qualifications
A Master's degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Education; Horticulture, Botany; Biology; Urban Forestry and Wildlife Management Public or Business Administration, four to five years of experience in the desired fields above, experience planning and/or managing and directing specialized parks or land maintenance, Environmental Education, or Climate Change Program, etc.
