Lower Burrell is looking for a new emergency management director.

Council voted unanimously to accept Anthony Errico's resignation as the city's emergency management director during an April 2 meeting. Errico had served in the volunteer position since February 2011.

“Tony did a great job,” Mayor Richard Callender said. “Any time that we had an issue, he handled it to the best of his ability. He was very responsible in the position.

“We're very happy with his work and sad to see him go.”

Errico, 59, of New Kensington said he resigned because of time conflicts. He works in the steel industry and also is first assistant chief at Lower Burrell Volunteer Fire Company No. 3.

“The main reason I resigned is work,” Errico said. “I work in Butler now, and I just really don't have time to dedicate to what needs done.”

Callender said the emergency management director coordinates emergency response efforts during natural and terroristic disasters.

He said the director is usually a firefighter or first responder because they're familiar with emergency situations.

“His main function is to write up the policy that is required by the state for any emergency situations that arise and how we're going to handle it,” Callender said. “He has, I believe, five deputies underneath him that, in emergency situations ... will coordinate the emergency management efforts of the fire departments, local rescue squads, things of that nature.”

Errico said he appreciates the city for giving him the opportunity to hold the position.
