The Mount Storm coal-fired power station sits on a man-made lake (the 1,200-acre lake was created as a cooling pond for the power plant) near Mount Storm, W.Va. The three massive generating units of the power station can burn more than 15,000 tons of coal per day.

The bituminous coal fields of Pennsylvania produced about 954,000 short tons of coal last week, bring the year-to-date total to 5.4 million tons, or about 5 percent less than for the same period in 2017, according to the Energy Information Administration.

Pennsylvania's anthracite production last week was 38,000 tons. The year-to-date total was 215,000 tons or about 12.1 percent less than 2017.

Nationally, coal companies produced about 15.2 million tons in the week, bringing the year-to-date total to 85.1 million tons or about 7.7 percent less than 2017.
