After coming from the big city of Sapporo we loved the smaller town of Otaru. Planned on just doing a day trip but changed to stay overnight. Wish we had taken a day off Sapporo and added it to Otaru. No lights on the canal as expected but we still loved Otaru. Easy to walk to everything and a lot to enjoy.

We went during winter.
We went during winter. It is a small quiet town and most shops close around 5-6pm. So good to settle dinner early. As a small and quiet town, the place is generally quiet and peaceful after dusk. There is nothing to do after dusk and travelers can take a stroll down the Otaru canal and enjoy the night view.

Give the canal a pass, especially if you have been to Europe. Very underwhelming. Take the local train one stop to Shioya and hike the Shioya Maru-yama. It is about a 6km round trip hike up a local mountain with great views. Take the same train to Yoichi to tour the Nikka Whiskey Distillery and sample great whiskeys in the restaurant after the tour (book reservation for tour ahead of time and remember everything shuts down around 16:00).

otaru has mire then inly the little canal. it is pituresque but only a small thing of town. the old shopping street with „100“ of fish restaurants is really unique for JP as it has pretty old stone buildings maybe 100 ir 150 years old.
don‘t miss the train ride from sapporo along the coast and the wonderful mountains

Otaru is so cute!
Otaru is so cute! It was nice to see the canal in the snow and the shops were super cute. Unfortunately for some reason (maybe Covid) it felt like a lot of the shops were closed so that was a bit of a bummer. But the nature was super nice and we had some delicious sushi at Hachi! Overall it was a good 3 night stay.
Oh my goodness this place was a dream. The staff were incredible, the food was superb and the VIEW. I was literally almost moved to tears watching the sunrise over the ocean in the open air bath. Yes, the decor is a little dated but you get a taste of luxury for half the price you would somewhere else, so I certainly didn't mind. It has a sort of old world charm a la Grand Budapest Hotel I actually quite liked. Not to mention Otaru is a beautiful town. The two days I spent here would have made the trip to Japan worth it on their own.
The family room had bunk beds for our kids, which they loved! It was spacious, clean, and comfortable for our family of four. Staff was friendly and helped us with parking and accessing amenities like the baths and breakfast. The baths were convenient and clean; pajamas were included so we could be comfortable walking around the hotel. The breakfast was delicious; my kids enjoyed everything and I appreciated the variety of foods to try. The location was easy walking distance from all major attractions in Otaru.
Location is excellent with room window having view of the canal. Walking 500m down slope from JR Otaru is pleasant but pulling up slope back to JR Otaru is different task, especially catching first train to Niseko at 613am with heavy snow. The receptionist was very helpful booking a 545am taxi one day a head. Need to reach Otaru early as basically every shop closes by 6pm.
The room was comfortable, quiet, clean, and large by Japanese standards. The furnishings were like new, with super comfortable beds. The hotel is a 15-minute walk from the train station and within easy walking distance of a lot of Otaru's tourist attractions. Friendly staff make this a hotel worth returning to.
The bathing facilities were awesome! There are quite a few baths in the womens’ section, and it wasn’t too busy. I also got a massage. The room was clean and a good size for one person or a couple. There is also English translations written for most hotel things such as the bathhouse and the breakfast.
- Staff: everyone was very friendly. All staff spoke English which was very helpful.
- Location: close to the station and all the main tourist spots
- Amazing breakfast
- Clean and attention to detail: enjoyed the design of the place.
- Very comfortable room
Highly recommend this boutique hotel!
I loved our stay here albeit farther from Otaru station than what I had expected. The two lovely ladies were so friendly and accommodating. They even helped us book a taxi when we left the place. The room we stayed in has enough space for 3 people with 3 luggage.
Location is good, short walk to the canal but a little further to the JR station although still walkable.
The staff was very friendly, helpful and welcoming.
The hotel room was very comfortable, spacious room and bathroom, comfortable bed.
The onsen here is awesome! Huge space, with several baths, for you to enjoy. They also provide some free snacks for the customers after they take the onsen! The location was really nice, just across the main station in Otaru.
Loved the hotel lobby and breakfast. Also enjoyed the deep bathtub. The location is easily walkable from the JR station. Beautiful views of the canal and old buildings.
The family that run the hotel was very friendly and helpful. They always gave a good information. On the last day, they pick up us to the train station. Very generously
Room is great and has a private onsen facing the sea and mountains..great view. The hotel is up on hilltop and many car parking lots which is very convenient.
just a great hotel, comfy, close to the station and to Otaru with a few stops. Gorgeous view on the port, supermarket and restaurants nearby in the mall.
