Women's Soccer Dominates Azusa Pacific Saturday

POMONA -- Samantha Putnam and Natalie Di Angelo each scored first half goals en route to a 2-0 shutout victory for the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team over Azusa Pacific Saturday night at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.  The Broncos move back to .500 at 2-2-0 on the year.  The visiting Cougars remain winless at 0-3-0.

Putnam gave Cal Poly Pomona the 1-0 lead in the 39th minute when Taylor Rasmussen served the ball up ahead to Putnam in behind the Cougar defense.  Putnam dribbled several times, went one-on-one with APU goalkeeper Isabelle Decker, and blasted a shot up and over Decker, burying it in the upper left hand corner of the net.

Di Angelo followed with her second goal of the season on a free kick from 25 yards out. She fired her attempt off the crossbar before it bounced across the goal line for the 2-0 CPP lead in the 43rd minute.

The crossbar got lots of action Saturday, especially in the first half.  Attempts by Daniela Paiz and Ambria Pogue also banged off the vinyl in the opening half, but to no avail.

The shots by Putnam and Di Angelo were the 10th and 11th shots, respectively, of the opening half for the Broncos, and CPP wasn't done.  The hosts kept the pressure on the Azusa Pacific defense all night, taking 11 more shots in the second half, but the Cougars were able to keep the Broncos off the scoreboard for the remainder of the night.

In the end, CPP outshot APU, 22-6, though both teams were awarded five corner kicks each.  APU's Decker made six saves in her losing effort, while CPP's Sydney Williams made three stops in her team's triumph.

Cal Poly Pomona will head to Irvine to take on Concordia-Irvine on Wednesday.  Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm.  The Broncos will then return home next Saturday against Notre Dame de Namur for their final non-conference matchup of the season.
