QUICK CLIP: McConnell “Stripped Away the Veneer” on GOP Plan to Cut Entitlements

On today’s Morning Joe, The Daily Beast’s Sam Stein highlighted Senator Mitch McConnell’s overt threat to Medicare and Social Security and the dishonest talking points Republicans used to promote their tax cuts for big corporations and millionaires.

McConnell’s comments come in the wake of new reports confirming that the tax plan that every observer outside of the Republican Caucus said would raise the deficit, raised the deficit. Senator McConnell, obviously shocked by this, responded by announcing his intention to close the hole he blew in the budget by stripping earned benefits away from taxpayers on Medicare and Social Security.

Along with protecting coverage for pre-existing conditions, Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid are on the ballot this November.

Sam Stein on McConnell’s Threat to Social Security and Medicare

Well, listen, I mean everyone who passed the tax cut package basically said it would pay for itself. They said it would create this great economic benefit, you’d have these increased revenues, therefore it’s perfect, you reduce the deficit while getting rid of taxes. It’s obviously proven to not be the case and, you know, Republicans hid the ball fairly well.  They said they weren’t going to touch entitlement reforms, said it was not on their political agenda, but I think what McConnell has done here, is he’s sort of stripped away the veneer and said in the next Congress we are going to try to take a whack at Social Security, Medicare and potentially Medicaid potentially. It’s, you know, somewhat of a political mishap, but it is the truth. this is what they want to do.
