Piers Morgan disagrees with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle breaking tradition with wedding cake

Joked they are creating "scandal and sensation" by doing their own thing!

Piers Morgan isn’t impressed with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle breaking tradition when it comes to their wedding cake.

The couple have eschewed a traditional fruit cake in favour of a lemon elderflower creation made by a London bakery.

On Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain, Piers declared: “For generations, fruit cake has been the cake of choice for royal weddings. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge followed tradition.”

He then joked: “But Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are creating scandal and sensation by going their own way!”

“I love fruit cake,” he added.

“To me, when you get married, you don’t muck around. You stick to tradition and have a fruit cake.”

That being said, the journalist did admit the lemon elderflower cake baked for Good Morning Britain by Great British Bake Off star Jane Beedle was delicious.

Kensington Palace confirmed Harry, 33, and Meghan, 36, have hired pastry chef Claire Ptak, owner of Violet Cakes in East London, to whip up their wedding cake.

“Prince Harry and Ms. Markle have asked Claire to create a lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate the bright flavours of spring.

“It will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers,” confirmed a spokesperson.

“Claire Ptak, who was raised in California, focuses on using seasonal and organic ingredients in her cakes.”

The spokesperson added: “Prince Harry and Ms. Markle are looking forward to sharing the cake with guests at their wedding at Windsor Castle on May 19th.”

There’s actually a connection between Meghan and Claire: the future royal once interviewed Claire for her now-defunct lifestyle website, The Tig!

Meghan closed the blog last year, after striking up her relationship with Harry.

In a statement, Claire said: “I can’t tell you how delighted I am to be chosen to make Prince Harry and Ms Markle’s wedding cake. Knowing that they really share the same values as I do about food provenance, sustainability, seasonality and most importantly flavour, makes this the most exciting event to be a part of.”

Harry and Meghan will marry on Saturday, May 19 at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

Piers has previously joked how disappointed he is to have missed out on a wedding invitation, given his past friendship with Meghan.

He began chatting with the former actress over Twitter because he was a fan of her US TV show Suits.

Then when Meghan visited the UK last year, she met up with Piers for a drink… before vanishing from contact.

He recently joked on GMB: “No more pub visits. I’m literally around the corner. I mean, she could pop down. We could put it right. I could get a front seat at the wedding.

“I could be that guy when they say, ‘Does anyone object?’ ‘I do! I thought I was that guy!’ My wife wouldn’t like it very much if I did, but you know…”
