BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Florida coach Mike White has an interesting challenge this season. For the first time in his coaching career, he gets to coach a five-star prospect in point guard Andrew Nembhard.

“It’s foreign to me and my staff,” White said. “It’s not foreign to the University of Florida.”

Nembhard has the challenge of following the veteran Chris Chiozza, who was a security blanket for the Gators, leading them to the 2017 Elite Eight and finishing last season as the program’s career leader in assists.

Chiozza, senior guard Jalen Hudson said, “was so experienced. His IQ was so high. I felt he was so far above the other point guards in the league.”

But Hudson, White and senior center Kevarrius Hayes all expressed confidence in the 6-foot-4 freshman Nembhard, part of Florida’s highly rated class.

“Cheese was a great player,” Hudson said. “Andrew is a great player as well.”

“For a freshman, he has a lot of poise,” Hayes said. “He’s a really great passer.”

White called Nembhard “an elite passer” and more. “Regardless of where he was ranked, he’s a high-character guy, a high-IQ guy.”

  1. I wouldn’t go that far NotQyteNeo, UK still has two 5 stars ranked ahead of all Florida’s 2019 class on every recruiting site. But just to have a class I feel that is in the same breath makes the Gatornation excited!!!

I personally like the versatility of our class better than UK and our recruiting class fits our system better than UK class.

It’s not just about the rankings, as we all know.

Tre Mann is an elite point guard, lock down defender and arguably if not the best, one of the best shootersin the class.

Scottie Lewis is probably the athletic guard in the country and enjoys playing defense more than offense and can guard up to 4 positions.

Omar Payne will bring the “pain” with his interior defense and has the potential to be a double-double, yes I said it, he’s that good.

But I will say one thing: UK really wanted to make Scottie Lewis their final piece of the 2019 but Mike White would not be denied and Scottie said that he just felt more comfortable with the Gators.

    Go Gators!!!

  2. Florida at #5 is highly, highly underrated. I like it! Florida’s freshmen are practicing at a high level, which makes Florida’s bench deep. Get ready for a great season Gators. Gator players are a bunch of unknown, but will make noise and be known as a TEAM by the time the tournament rolls around. I’m excited! The five star came to Florida because of the TV time the Gators will be getting this season. The pieces are in place. Go Gators!!
