Thomas Announces Retirement

Dear People of St. Paul’s,

It is with a heart full of gratitude that I share with you my decision to retire. My last Sunday at St. Paul’s will be Pentecost Sunday, May 23. It has been my joy to share ministry with you for 19 years, through all the ups and downs that a generation of being church can bring. I treasure the spiritual transitions of baptisms, marriages and memorials that have been so life affirming. I am so appreciative of working with so many of you as leaders and stewards of Christ’s presence in San Mateo County. Most of all I am grateful for the week in and week out rhythm of prayer and service we have shared.

I have been in the professional parish ministry for 36 years. I have been an ordained ministry for 32 years and 19 of those as your rector. I am retiring now to have the opportunity to explore some different kinds of work in the world. I know I would like to do more work with Circles of Trust and direct work with those in need. Discovering what God has in mind is part of the adventure.

Most immediately I will be moving to St. Louis. Julie has accepted a position there as associate rector of Holy Communion Episcopal Church. Both of us are excited about exploring a different part of the country, with its own challenges and gifts. And of course, it is two hours away from the University of Missouri so we may get the chance to see Elliot occasionally as he works his way through college.

As we approach increased possibilities for safe gathering, I am hopeful that we will be able to arrange a time to pray together as a community once more (probably outside). After Easter there will be time to catch up with many of you personally. Later this week you’ll be hearing from our wardens about next steps for the Vestry and parish.

I will miss you, and will always carry you in my heart. And I will be praying for you as you discern your future and who your next rector will be.

Gratefully,

Thomas
