Staff members for Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith met with veterans in Luverne Wednesday to learn about the challenges they face when trying to secure benefits after service.

They discussed how the senator's office can connect area veterans with things like health care, education, housing or job placement benefits.

"They have untimely sacrificed, many of them, years of service, and there is not greater opportunity for me in my job than to hear first hand their work in service and how the federal government can make sure that we are repaying that service with the benefits they deserve and have earned," southern Minnesota outreach director Bree Maki said.

Sen. Smith recently introduced a bill to assist veterans who face hearing loss as a result of their service.
