The Maple Terrace Artist Residency Program 2018 SESSIONS
January 3 - 31 | MOODY ROSE CHRISTOPHER
Moody Rose Christopher is best known for her electric painting rich with vibrant color, twisting organic shapes, and gold glitter. Self taught, she began creating as a way to deal with emotional turbulence. Her current body of work uses nude figures as a metaphor for vulnerability, domestic scenes to represent the artist's inner workings, and a nest of tight knit abstract shapes to weave absurd compositions. The work is as complex as it is simple, everything is arbitrary but intentional. Rose focuses on absurdity as a tool to shock the viewer and make them rethink preconceived notions of the everyday.
Rose attended Clinton Community College in 2012 and has exhibited at Flynn Dog (Burlington, VT), Strand Center for the Arts (Plattsburgh, NY), and Black Horse Gallery (Burlington, VT), among others. Her work has been featured in Seven Days and Nippertown. Moody recently moved from Vermont to Brooklyn, NY where she now lives and works. |
March 23 - April 20 | BENJAMIN TERRY
Benjamin Terry lives and works in Dallas, TX. Ultimately, his work is about editing and displaying. It is a reflection of my environment; a constant study of how paintings, drawings, and objects interact, create and manipulate relationships, and engage viewers. He received an MFA in Drawing and Painting in 2013, from the University of North Texas. He has exhibited work in numerous solo and group shows in Aspen, Atlanta, Charleston, Dallas, and Houston. He most recently had a solo exhibition at Art League Houston, and will have solo exhibitions at Ro2 Gallery (Dallas) and Guerrero-Projects (Houston) in 2018.
Curatorial work has become an integral part of his practice with exhibitions curated at Kirk Hopper Fine Arts and Circuit12 Contemporary in 2017, and an exhibition scheduled at Texas Women’s University (Denton) in 2018. He was featured in volume 96 and 132 of New American Paintings, and has received both the Clare Hart Degoyler and the Arch and Anne Giles Kimbrough awards from the Dallas Museum of Art. He currently teaches Drawing and Painting at the University of North Texas. |
May 3 - June 1 | KRISTEN SANDERS
Imagine one million and six hundred thousand years ago - a prehistoric character points. There in the moistened soil, a hominid ancestor draws a line, inscribing with her finger the first mark. At the core of her work is a meditation on this very scene as the otherwise unknowable origins of image making. She invents and re-create narratives of origin and discovery within our evolutionary history in order to examine the boundaries we set up to define humanness, and is particularly attentive to where women in prehistory fit in within these narratives.
Kristen Sanders currently lives and works in Minneapolis, MN. She received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of California Davis in 2012 and her Masters of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2016. In 2014, Kristen attended the Vermont Studio Center, and in 2016 her work was featured on the cover of New American Paintings' MFA Annual. Kristen has shown her work at Pro Arts in Oakland California, Sadie Halie Projects in Minneapolis, Sediment Arts in Richmond Virginia, and Present Co. |
