The Newest Americans Fellowship is a collaboration between Rutgers' Center for Migration and the Global City, Newark Trust for Education, and Schools That Can Newark. We are recruiting the first cohort of Newest Americans Fellows to participate in a series of half-day workshops from January 2019 – May 2019. Each workshop will introduce teachers to multimedia “story packages” with corresponding study guides and assignment options. Between each workshop Fellows will choose an audiovisual resource and classroom exercise for their students to explore the immigrant history of Newark or their own multicultural present. After reporting back on the efficacy of the assignments, Fellows will help refine study guides and curricular tool kits based on their classroom experience. Fellows will be provided a $1,000 stipend for participating in the Fellowship.
This is open to all Newark high school teachers. Please complete this application by October 31st if you are interested in joining this first cohort of Newest American Fellows and can commit to all dates. We will notify all applicants as to whether they have been selected by November 15th.
If you have any questions about this Fellowship or application process, please contact Erin Sweeney (
