More than 137 million Americans are making lists and strategizing their plan of attack for the first weekend of the 2016 holiday shopping season.
Shopping will start on Thanksgiving and continue for days with Black Friday, small business Saturday and Sunday, and Cyber Monday. Black Friday is expected to be the busiest day this year, according to the National Retail Federation.
Even so, the shopping “holiday” could be loosing some of its luster. Experts are expecting smaller crowds this year. The shift to an extended shopping season plays a role in that. That is due to a shift in millennial shopping habits, like online shopping.
“Studies are showing that millenials actually like a longer christmas season, and don’t even seem to mind so much if it goes back a little before halloween,” said Villanova University’s Charles Taylor.
Many Cyber Monday deals are available long before Monday actually arrives and will continue later into the season.
Men are expected to outspend women this year, at least for the first weekend of Christmas shopping.
