Lower Paxton Township Director of Public Safety and Police Chief David Spotts resigned Thursday, citing a decision to retire from community policing.
After rumors surfaced earlier this week that he was about to leave his post, Spotts said he had nothing to share publicly about his job status.
Lowman Henry, chairman of the township's board of supervisors, said the board will take action on Spotts' resignation Tuesday during their regular business meeting. He would not comment further, saying it was a personnel matter. He said Spotts, in his resignation letter, cited a desire to retire from community policing.
Township officials are working to select an interim person to oversee the township's police department and work with volunteer fire companies and ambulance services.
"Eventually we will launch a search for a permanent replacement," said Henry.
Spotts was hired as Lower Paxton's public safety director in November 2015 after serving as chief of police in Mechanicsburg for almost 16 years. The township appointed him to an additional role of chief of police in May 2017.
Previously he served police departments in Upper Allen and Carroll townships and Dillsburg.
Lower Paxton Township police department has about 57 sworn officers who serve a community of about 50,000 residents.
