APR Public Recognition Awards Database
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Portland men's tennis and beach volleyball earned Public Recognition Awards based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate, the NCAA announced on Wednesday. These awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent their respective sport. Both programs logged perfect scores of 1,000 during the multi-year rates from 2013-17.
"Our teams perform at a high level academically across the board and it is nice to see the hard work of men's tennis and beach volleyball earn recognition," said Scott Leykam, Portland's Vice President for Athletics. "Men's tennis recorded a perfect score during this time frame, which is impressive, while beach volleyball was honored in its first year of eligibility. We anticipate this being the first of many department highlights as NCAA APR and University-specific graduation and academic data continues to be released in the coming weeks."
Portland has had 42 different teams earned Public Recognition Awards since the program's inception in 2005.
APRs for programs in the top 10 percent ranged from 985 to a perfect 1,000, and the number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,188, marking an increase of 98 teams from last year.
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 23. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance. Portland has never faced penalties since the 13 years that the APR program has been in play.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.
