NC Second-Grader Raises $1,500 to Feed Homeless For Thanksgiving

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A Charlotte second-grader with a goal of raising $150 to feed the homeless ended up with more than $1,500 in donations.

Alex Fischer used the money to purchase and assemble Thanksgiving boxes for the Charlotte Rescue Mission.

“I just thought it would be nice to do Thanksgiving food boxes for people in need,” the 7-year-old said. “I want other people to have a happy Thanksgiving.”

Alex’s parents, Lisa and James, say their daughter came to them with the idea.

“We said, 'OK why don't we pack a box together as a family?'” Lisa said. “And she said, ‘well one is not enough.’ So we said, ‘why don't you try to raise her some of the money to help pay for them?’”

They set a goal of $150 to make 10 boxes.

“Honestly we figured we’d be chipping in most of the money at the end,” James laughed.

But they didn’t realize just how committed Alex would be. She went door to door, started a lemonade stand, and even made a presentation at her school.

Her GoFundMe ended up raising more than $1,500.

Enough to feed 100 families.

“I am thankful that other people can have Thanksgiving now,” Alex smiled.

Alex did have some leftover money. It will all go to the rescue mission, to pay for turkeys.
