CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE CLOSURE: UPDATES, RESOURCES, AND CONTEXT

UNCW Receives $10 Million Gift For New School; Largest In The Institution's History

The University of North Carolina Wilmington plans to launch a new school – thanks to the largest gift in the history of the institution.  The highest donation amount so far was $5 million -- given last year by Dr. Yousry and Linda Sayed.

UNCW is getting twice that amount -- $10 million -- from David and Helen Congdon to create the David S. Congdon School of Supply Chain, Business Analytics and Information Systems within the Cameron School of Business.

Congdon graduated from UNCW in 1978 and served as President and CEO of Old Dominion Freight Line for 18 years.

Chancellor Jose Sartarelli says most of that money will go towards programs and new opportunities for students and faculty.

“That gift will allow us to not only spend some money fixing up the facility where this school’s going to be residing – but also provide us more scholarships and more fellowships, more assistantships, more distinguished professorships, etc.”

The Chancellor says he has about $75 million worth of “asks” out in the community.

“We’re working on a few other gifts along the same lines – gifts that are coming from either alumni or not – but aimed at programmatic improvement of the university – more scholarships, more programs, and in some cases, more infrastructure.”

Last year’s history-making donation of $5 million by Doctor Yousry and Linda Sayed enabled UNCW to create programs in pharmaceutical science which are now going through the approval process.
