Moms 'open their hearts' and doors for March 24 protesters

These moms are working on a massive project: trying to house the thousands of March for Our Lives protesters.

Several DC-area moms have organized a massive operation to find host homes for the thousands of protesters excepted for the March 24 "March For Our Lives."

So far the group has been able to find around 1,000 homes to host around 2,800 students and adults.

These moms, who have all connected online until Wednesday, met for the first time inside a Chevy Chase, Maryland host’s home.

Meanwhile, in the basement, their kids were hard at work preparing lunch bags for the protesters.

"First we take a bag. Granola Bar. Some trail mix,” said Anna Wilson, who also wrote a personal note to drop in the bag.

Upstairs, we heard a mom say, “I did call, I phoned the number that was there.” The mom was talking about her experience trying to screen one of the potential guests.

This project is a massive undertaking and started, almost accidentally, with a Tweet.

"I did have one friend who suggested that I delete my twitter account and just pretend it never happened,” laughed Elizabeth Andrews.

Andrews tells WUSA 9, she was so inspired by Marjory Stoneman Douglas students and their announcement of the March that she hit social media.

“I sent out this tweet into the universe to my 30 followers,” said Andrews.

The Tweet read, “As a DC resident and mother of a high schooler, I'll help to find free lodging for kids and their families coming to this march."

Her kid is Anna Wilson, one of the teens working in the basement.

"I got a text from one of my friends saying, your mom's viral on twitter. I was like, ‘Whaaaa?” said Wilson.

"Then I just felt like, oh-my-gosh, I've got to do something,” said Andrews.

Since then, Andrews says she’s received texts from all across the country, even Canada. After reaching out, the group, DC Local Ambassadors, and others in the area, a roundtable of women was born.

The eight or more moms are now all working to coordinate this effort.

They’re screening guests, they’re trying to pair people appropriately and they’re even trying to provide metro cards and transportation maps.

All of the moms have different professions, contribute in different ways, and they’re all passionate.

"What we are living through right now is not normal,” said Andrews, “You know, as a parent, I'm embarrassed that we all didn't kind-of get this critical mass and stand-up ourselves before...but these kids in Parkland stood-up. You can feel that it's just this special moment in time that if we all stand-up together, we can make a difference."

“We’re opening our hearts,” said the meeting’s host, Julia Beck, while she gave the teens instructions.

The group is so organized, they even have a website where you can sign-up as a host or visitor. They tell WUSA 9 they’re trying to vet everyone as much as possible.
