The Fight For the Abolition of Overdoses

Developing a passion for the opioid crisis relief effort was not exactly the picture that was in my mind when I first arrived at college a few years ago. Sometimes life has different things in store for you then you planned. The truth of the matter was this year was the year my brother was supposed to be arriving at college with me. He had passed away just under a year earlier a senior in high school from an opioid overdose.

The Harsh Realities of the Opiate Epidemic

After the passing of my brother, I was numb for days, maybe even months. However long that time was when I finally did start to break free of the haze of grief I found that I saw the world differently. I decided to apply to write for an op-ed piece at the school paper on the opiate crisis that was ravaging the nation. I went on to pen 10 articles learning much along the way.

Learning From Experience: Facts From the 10 Articles That Started it All

You probably don’t realize the extent of the epidemic we have on our hands. It is not an easy situation to solve either. It’s important to first educate yourself on the nature of the crisis and some of the numbers behind it. Finally, I think everyone should know how to rescue an overdose victim. Who knows maybe someone else will get a chance to go to college with their brother that might not have otherwise.

An Epidemic That is Psychological in Nature

Studies have looked at the nature of this epidemic and as of yet, there is not a conclusive cause although a few correlations have been identified. For the most part, experts seem to agree that a huge part of it is psychological in nature as is addiction. This means it is especially difficult to fight.

Shocking Statistics to Frame Your Perspective
Last year in the United States of the over 60 thousand deaths nearly 70% of them were from overdoses. Today nearly 130 people a day die from opiate overdoses. It is the leading cause of death for people under the age of 35 to top it all off.

Saving a Life

This is a very simple skill but it could end up being the most important thing you ever learn. If not for yourself then it could be for someone else. There is a drug that is available over the counter called Naloxone. You can ask your pharmacist for it and they will know what it is. Stab it into an overdose victim and it will block the drug thus saving their life.

Final Words on the Opiate Crisis

This is a crisis that is not going away any time soon. For now, I ask that you just arm yourself with knowledge. Maybe it could really help someone else out someday, you never kno
