Our students come from a diverse range of backgrounds with a wide variety of socio-economic classes and ethnicities represented. We have a strong ELL (English Language Learners) program and a large Special Education Population. Despite the struggles that some of our students face at home, they come to school ready to learn and play.
Our students are wonderful 6-8th graders and work hard to be the best that they can be.
This project will give our students an opportunity to excel on the court by providing them updated storage that help our students focus on playing instead of managing resources.
My Project
We have a large group of English Language Learners (ELL) students in our school who come to our building from around the world. We have over 20 languages spoken in our student’s homes and many of our students are just learning how to speak English. While they are learning to speak English however, I would like to make sure that they have at least one book to read in their native language.
I can only imagine how intimidating it would to come to another country and not know the language and then be expected to do everything in school in another language.
For example, I have a copy of The Hunger Games in Mandarin in my library and have a student who has loved reading it. Teachers use it as a reward for when he completes his work in English. I would love to get Catching Fire and Mockingjay in Mandarin as well, so that he can continue to be motivated to read. Another student we have was looking for a book in French, at this point, I don't have anything for her, but with this grant I would be able to offer her Harry Potter books, which so many student love. I have also chosen books like Alice In Wonderland or Raime Nightingale in other languages so that students can compare with the English versions that we already have in our library.
My hope is that I will be able to give students a little slice of their home country and native language as they get adjusted to life here. Please help me to give our students a little bit of their native country while they are adjusting to a new home.
