From the Principal's Desk
Medlock Bridge Community,
We are excited to begin the 2018-19 school year! We are thrilled to see our students return to us for what is sure to be an extraordinary school year. This year we will provide our students with a weekly STEM special. Our Mustangs R.O.C.K. positive behavior initiative will be supplemented by 7 Mindsets, a social emotional learning program. We will continue building our resources and capacity to use technology to enhance learning in the classroom.
If you are new to Medlock Bridge Elementary, welcome! Medlock Bridge is truly a special place. We care deeply for our students and families, and continuously work to make this school a point of pride for our community. Throughout the school year you will see our core beliefs in action. Our mission is to educate and inspire ALL students to be lifelong learners. We will do so by meeting the needs of our diverse learners, providing 21st century learning experiences, building strong community relationships, and fostering a positive and safe school climate. You will see us emphasize Literacy for All: Every Student, Every Day. You will see us continue our exceptional work in STEM instruction. You will see us continue to emphasize positive behavior through our Mustangs R.O.C.K. program, which guides our students to be Respectful, On Task, Concerned Citizens, and Kind. Finally, you will see us focus on teaching the “whole child,” supporting academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development.
Please reserve the dates for Curriculum Night (see the important dates below) on your calendar so you can find out more about your child’s classroom experience. We are excited to see you! More information to come from your child’s teacher.

Volunteer Registration
Do you want to be a mystery reader? Would you like to help out in your child's classroom? We welcome all parents to come volunteer and be a part of your child's school experience at Medlock Bridge. Per Fulton County policy, ALL parents (even is you have completed the application in the past) that want to volunteer for the 2018-2019 school year MUST complete the mandatory training or they will not be allowed to volunteer in classrooms! In the past, we have had to turn many parents away as they haven't completed this training - which is heartbreaking for everyone! Please don't let this happen to you - visit the FCS site directly to complete the required informational training at least 72 hours prior to volunteering: http://www.fultonschools.org/en/divisions/sup/comm/Pages/partnersvolunteers.aspx
Lunch Visitors
Parents are welcome to come have lunch at school beginning August 20, 2018. This allows us to establish our routines within the cafeteria during the first two weeks of school.
All visitors must bring a picture ID, sign in and wear a visitor's badge during your visit. At least one visitor must be listed in the student's approved contact list on your green Student Contact form.
At the end of lunch, parents and visitors must exit the cafeteria and return to the front office. Parents and visitors may not return to the classroom with your child.

What Does Personalized Technology Look Like in Today’s Classroom?
Personalized Learning Technology for Students at School and at Home
Fulton County has rolled out three programs for students to support both literacy and math core competencies. The two literacy programs which were rolled out last school year are iRead (Kindergarten - 2nd Grades) and iReady Reading (3rd – 5th Grades). The new program being rolled out this year, iReady Math, will serve Kindergarten – 5th Grades.
What is iRead, iReady Reading & iReady Math?
These programs are technology-driven learning for students to enhance teacher-led direct instruction through virtual lessons, practice and assessment. iRead (K-2) supports and strengthens phonics and literacy instruction, iReady Reading (3-5) supports student learning in higher level phonics, morphology and literacy instruction, and iReady Math (K-5) supports math instruction including higher level thinking skills required of students today.
Is iRead, iReady Reading & iReady Math the Same for All Students?
Absolutely not! Students will take a diagnostic pre-assessment on the computer or iPad at the beginning of the school year to find out what they know. From there, the program will set each student on their own individual learning path. This will enable students to begin learning new concepts and keep them moving forward at their own speed.
How Much is Enough?
Research says that 45 – 60 minutes per week of each program/practice should help grow students in both reading and math. While students will have access to these programs in class during center rotations, many teachers will also be encouraging students to access the math and reading programs at home as homework or as enrichment. Please support your children by allowing them to access these programs at home. These are not video games or meaningless time fillers. Rather, these programs are research-based teaching supports to help all students find success in the core subjects of literacy and mathematics.
As always, thank you for your concern and support in your child’s learning. And, as always, please do not hesitate to reach out to their teachers or myself with any questions! Best - Patty
