It's happening more and more frequently: Connecticut residents look out their windows and see a black bear in their front yard or driveway. 🐻 These bears are here to stay, says UConn College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources graduate student Melissa Ruszczyk. Working with UConn and the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection, Ruszczyk studies how humans can help keep them wild. https://lnkd.in/eX9mDgwz

In her dissertation, anthropology Ph.D. student Madeline Baird is using ethnographic methods to explore how U.S.-influenced immigration policies impact migrants’ path and health outcomes. https://lnkd.in/ex62GTRV She hopes the project will inform national, regional, and local migration and health policy to promote human rights and public health for people headed to the U.S. southern border. #UConnResearch #UUConn #research #dissertation #anthropology #immigration #uspolicy #immigrationpolicy #anthropologyresearch

Until now, researchers have only been able to induce quantum behaviors, like magnetism and superconductivity, at extremely low temperatures. A new theory from UConn physics professor Alexander Balatsky is changing this. https://lnkd.in/eqW-Kgh2 Balatsky's team of researchers from UConn, the Nordic Institute of Theoretical Physics (NORDITA), and Stockholm University (SU) are the first in the world to induce quantum behavior at room temperature, making a non-magnetic material magnetic using laser light. This achievement underscores UConn’s commitment to advancing quantum materials research, from the Quantum Initiative to strategic partnerships such as QuantumCT, a joint effort with Yale University aimed at establishing Connecticut as a national hub for quantum technology. #uconnresearch #uconn #research #quantum #quantumct #connecticut #superconductivity #magnetism #quantumresearch

Not getting enough sleep is bad for your health, and Black and Hispanic women report particularly poor quality sleep. Now, a team of researchers in Connecticut is working with communities in the state to figure out how Black and Hispanic women can get more rest. https://lnkd.in/eH-HHbZa #uconnresearch #uconn #connecticut #publichealth #sleep #sleepresearch #womenofcolor

Breast cancer survival rates have increased over the past few decades, but social, political, and environmental factors still impact each individual's disease progression. https://lnkd.in/et8f3qtt Human development and family sciences professor Bellizzi Keith has received funding from the Connecticut Breast Health Initiative (CT BHI) to study how these factors may accelerate aging in adults with a history of breast cancer. Bellizzi will collaborate with professors Kun Chen and Jun Yan to explore how unemployment, education, racial discrimination, and food and housing insecurity impact the aging process in adults diagnosed with breast cancer. #uconnresearch #uconn #research #connecticut #ctbhi #connecticutbreasthealthinitiative #breasthealth #breastcancer #cancer #health #publichealth

"We are hoping to get a history going back about 30 million years," says Tracy D. Frank, head of UConn's department of earth sciences. https://lnkd.in/eBQHAuv7 In August and October of 2023, a team of researchers supported by the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) traveled to the coast of Greenland to drill deep down into the muddy seabed, seeking information about the region's glacial history and how the Greenland Ice Sheet will respond to climate change. Frank is one of the researchers who helped gather samples -- she's now using the miles and miles of muddy cores to reconstruct the past, helping inform the future as the ice sheet melts. #uconnresearch #research #uconn #ice #greenland #greenlandicesheet #climatechange #sealevelrise #earthscience #iodp
