9/11 Memorial & Museum Ambassador Program 2018
Students entering grades 10 to 12 can apply to take part in a unique, year-long, afterschool program that offers a behind-the-scenes look into the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. From mid-September to mid-May, Ambassadors examine Museum artifacts and explore ongoing themes and issues raised by 9/11. They also gain professional experience by helping with hands-on activities for young visitors and their caregivers. Finally, ambassadors write artifact talks and learn how to present them to Museum visitors.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: JUNE 29, 2018
Only completed applications will be considered. Completed applications include:
1. Student and parent/guardian information form
2. Letter of recommendation from a teacher, coach, guidance counselor, or employer
3. Teacher sponsor form
4. Program attendance signature
5. Three completed short essay questions
Some candidates will be invited to the Museum for an in-person interview during the first two weeks of August, and letters of acceptance will be sent by the end of August. The program accepts ten applicants per year.
PROGRAM TOPICS AND ATTENDANCE:
Topics covered in the program include the design of the Memorial and Museum, the history of the World Trade Center, the events of 9/11 and their aftermath, the repercussions of the attacks, al-Qaeda, and public speaking techniques.
Attendance at afterschool sessions on Wednesdays and select programs on Saturdays is required.
STIPEND:
All Ambassadors will receive a $1,000 stipend upon the successful completion of the program. This includes attending all mandatory afterschool sessions, participating in Saturday programs, and completing all homework assignments.
Transportation expenses are covered by the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.

Each Ambassador must have a teacher sponsor. These sponsors serve as the Museum’s point of contact with your school. Ambassadors will be exposed to emotionally challenging and difficult material, and may need a teacher at the school to provide support. PROGRAM ATTENDANCE
As an Ambassador, you will be required to attend afterschool sessions and a select number of Saturday programs.
AFTERSCHOOL SESSIONS:
September 2018 to May 2019
Wednesdays, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. (with breaks for NYC Department of Education holidays)
Afterschool sessions include exploration of the Museum’s collections and exhibitions, presentations by guest speakers, artifact investigations, and field trips to other cultural institutions. In addition, Ambassadors learn about museum professions and gain public speaking skills. Ambassadors complete one hour of homework each week, which includes films, readings, and written reflections.
SATURDAY PROGRAMS:
November 2018 to May 2019
9 a.m. – 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
During Saturday programs, Ambassadors help teach young visitors and their caregivers about the history of the World Trade Center, the events of 9/11, and the global response through hands-on activities in the Education Center. Specific dates and times will be scheduled when the program begins. Staff will work with Ambassadors to find a schedule that accommodates other commitments they may have.
