Description/Duties & Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the City Librarian, three Senior Librarians supervise a major library-wide section such as Children's Services, Young Adult Services or Collection Management. These positions provide system wide program development and implementation, and coordination and direction of staff to ensure success of an assigned field of specialty. These positions require the ability to work evenings and weekends.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Senior Librarian – Children's Services

• Develop and coordinate library-wide children programs

• Oversee, develop, and implement story time, school readiness programs, homework help programs, summer reading programs, Ayuda, Día de los Niños and the Annual Family Literacy Festival

• Coordinate outreach and partnership development with Santa Clarita schools to market services

• Develop web content and oversee readers advisory services for children

Senior Librarian – Young Adult Services

• Develop and coordinate library-wide young adult programs

• Oversee and coordinate all public library digital services, including the library website and social media

• Oversee, develop, and implement teen advisory boards, Teen Fest, homework help programs, and summer reading programs

• Oversee all materials, services, and programs designed to meet the needs of the adult users of the library, including the Digital Literacy Program, Digital Drop In, Book Clubs, and the One Story One City programs

Senior Librarian – Collection Management

• Coordinate collection development and management, including selection, acquisition, cataloging, classification, and processing of library materials including digital resources

• Manage and maintain the integrated library catalog system, with knowledge of MARC records management

• Communicate and implement City and division policies and procedures for circulation operations

In addition to these duties and responsibilities, all Senior Librarians will:

• Oversee, train, lead, motivate, and evaluate assigned employees

• Attend and present at community meetings of service clubs and committee groups

• Resolve difficult customer service issues and respond to patron concerns including Library account issues and Library policies

• Provide administrative support to the Library Administrator and act as the Library Administrator in their absence

• Participate in the development of assigned program budget; forecast funds needed for equipment, materials, and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; recommend budgetary adjustments as necessary

• Develop and implement marketing strategies to promote the library and outreach programs to engage the community, business groups, and patrons in library services and programs

• Maintain current knowledge of new trends and innovations in the field of library science and designated field of specialty in addition to participating in professional development activities

• Establish positive working relationships with staff, internal partners and community members; act as a representative of the library at various meetings and events

Education and Experience

• Master's Degree in Library and/or Information Science from a graduate school accredited by the American Library Association

• Three years of progressively responsible professional public library experience

• Supervisory or lead experience is highly desirable

• Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary will be considered

• A valid Class C California driver's license

Knowledge and Abilities

• Strong knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of public librarianship and the ability to evaluate and implement library programs in designated field of specialty

• Strong knowledge of new trends and innovations in the field of library science and the ability to continue professional development activities in designated field of specialty

• Strong organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects and programs simultaneously, be sensitive to deadlines and changing priorities, and work within the constraints of the budget

• Strong fiscal knowledge and the ability to participate in the development of library cost estimates, work within the constraints of the budget, help monitor expenditures, and evaluate the budget of assigned programs

• Strong leadership skills and the ability to effectively supervise, train, evaluate, motivate, provide feedback, and quickly and effectively resolve poor performance issues

• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify creative solutions to complex program issues

• Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate professionally, make public presentations, develop effective marketing materials, and write comprehensive reports

• Strong customer service and conflict management skills and the ability to deal effectively with patrons

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain collaborative working relationships with staff, community members, and internal partners

• Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper and documents weighing up to 25 pounds

Compensation includes enrollment in California Public Employees' Retirement System as a replacement for Social Security plus a competitive benefits package. All appointments are made at the "A" step of the salary range unless otherwise authorized by the City Manager.
