Seahawks, Tigers Stage Exhibition For Relief Efforts

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – For the second straight year, the UNCW men's basketball team will play an exhibition event to benefit hurricane relief efforts in southeastern North Carolina. The Seahawks will host Atlantic Coast Conference member Clemson in an exhibition game on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, to raise money to aid victims of Hurricane Florence. The destructive storm caused extensive damage when it made landfall on Sept. 14 near Wrightsville Beach.

The Seahawks and Tigers will square off at 5 p.m. at Trask Coliseum in a regular game format. Clemson is coached by former UNCW skipper Brad Brownell, who led the Seahawks to a pair of Colonial Athletic Association championships in 2003 and 2006.

UNCW received a waiver from the NCAA to stage the special game. Proceeds will benefit the Good Shepherd Center in Wilmington and UNCW's Campus Emergency Fund for Student Hurricane Relief, a donor-supported fund launched by UNCW in the days after the hurricane. UNCW assisted in disaster relief one year ago when the Seahawks joined North Carolina, UNC Greensboro and East Carolina in a series of 13-minute segments on Nov. 5, 2017, to benefit the governor's North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund.

Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli:
"So many of our students have been deeply affected by this disaster, and we are doing everything we can to support them in their time of need. We are grateful to our friends at Clemson for working with us to make this happen, and to our fans for their ongoing support. We anticipate a terrific event for our community!"

UNCW Head Coach C.B. McGrath:
"We're looking forward to welcoming Brad and his team to Wilmington for this special game. Proceeds from the game will help a lot of people who are hurting right now. It's for a good cause, so we're hoping the community will turn out to raise money to help everyone in this part of the state get back on their feet."

Clemson Head Coach Brad Brownell:
We are excited to help contribute to a community that we care about deeply. Having personally been through several hurricanes, I know the devastation and problems they can cause for those living in this part of the country, specifically the Carolinas. In working with coach McGrath, we hope this game can help be a small part of the healing process for the many folks of the Wilmington community and surrounding areas."
