The best part of life is not knowing what to expect and wonderful surprises along the way. The best part about reading a new author is the same.
Sometimes we find the best surprises when we least expect it and I’m glad I chose to review this sweet romance. Written somewhat like a second chance story, the author brings two opposites together for a heartwarming story. Full of small town family who are always in your business but have your back regardless of anything you may need.
The connection between Luke and Charlotte is steamy and you can feel the tension rolling. Beautifully written and full of lusty feelings and burning love but yet it is a clean romance too. A heartwarming wonderful choice for your summer beach reads! That ending – totally swoon worthy!
Cannot wait to read more from her!

This was a fun, cute small town romance. I loved the character's, the town and the beauty of "starting over" theme of this story. Every now and then I need a good lighthearted read and this one was good! Makes a great summer read.

Second Chance Summer was a quick, sexy and entertaining small town romance full of swoon and heart. It was a classic story of big city girl meeting a small town country boy. Luke and Charlotte’s love story hooked me in from their first encounter. Their banter, electric chemistry and personalities all intertwined to create a wonderful romance.
This was such a great read from Poppy St. James. It was a light, funny, sexy, and sweet read about taking charge of life and finding love and acceptance. I enjoyed the setting in charming Shady Grove, Texas with its quirky characters and close knit community. This was an entertaining and fun read, and was exactly what I was looking for to escape for a few hours.

This book is such a summer read, it is fun, sexy and light-hearted. Luke and Charlotte are the complete opposite, yet their chemistry can't be denied. I loved their banter and how they challenged each other.
At the start, I will admit, Charlotte wasn't my favourite character. She came across as rude and a little stuck up. It took me a while to like her, but I got there eventually.
Overall, this book is a simple, romantic, swoon-worthy read that would be perfect to read at the beach.

Poppy St James is a new author to me. Second Chance Summer was a sweet, romantic well written story that left me with a smile on my face. From the first chapter I was drawn into Charlotte Freemont and Luke Wilder’s story. Fate often works in mysterious ways and this is what happens for our couple
Charlotte is a runaway bride and she knows in her heart of hearts that she has done the right thing. She isn’t looking for love but again, fate often has other plans and when she finds herself in a small town, alone she meets Luke. He is a man who having been hurt before has built up walls and has no intention of letting anyone in, however he didn’t count on Charlotte or his attraction to her.
The chemistry and connection between them is intense and cannot be ignored. Could Charlotte be the one to finally get Luke to open his heart to love again?

I loved this sweet, romantic story with the classic "happily ever after" ending as any romance story should be. If you are looking for a clean, flirty, but at times, steamy (yes it can be both!) read then this one is for you. This is well-written and easy to read. I loved all of the characters and their small town! I was caught from the beginning and would have read it all in one sitting if I had the time!

Controlling parents are one thing. Parents who don’t love or care for their children are the worst! This pair lost parents, love and had lots of self doubt. If they figure it out, will be a surprise

Sometimes You Find Yourself By Accident. Let's be perfectly upfront: I don't have one qualm whatsoever in telling you right here, right now that by the end of this book, the couple is together and everything is awesome. *THIS IS A ROMANCE BOOK*, and therefore this is a given. :D
With that out of the way, this was actually a fun and fast one, reading seemingly much faster than its near 300 page length would generally suggest. It is fairly low angst, as much as that can be said of a romance featuring someone running from their life and another person trying to recover from his. It is utterly steeped in small town Southern charm, even if rooted in Texas (where they somehow think they are different from other Southern towns - you're not, and football is as much a god anywhere in the rural South as it is in Texas ;) ). And it has all of the requisite fish-out-of-water / good ol' boy hijinx. The one thing it doesn't have, which some romance fans will hate and others love, is that there is little more than kissing in this book, even as the couple is shown in bed overnight together. So for those "sweet" / "clean" romance types, this one is for you. If you *have* to have sex in your romance books... just know up front this one isn't that. It was a great read regardless of that point, and a solid way to pass a couple of hours on a long summer day. Very much recommended.

A sweet small town romance, and a truly enjoyable story that sees Luke Wilder’s perfectly humdrum life get turned upside down when Charlotte Freemont waltzes into town. Luke thinks he has her pegged, with her top of the range Audi, driving from New York to LA, he’s right about one thing though, Charlotte is definitely not small town. Or is she? After both getting off to a bad start, Luke and Charlotte actually form a bond of sorts and Luke finds himself opening up to Charlotte. Luke though doesn’t know anything about why Charlotte is on her lone road trip. A sweet read with sweet characters and little angst. I listened to the audio version, mainly so I could listen to Joe Arden’s sexy rumble, and of course I was not disappointed. Emma Wilder too, was also wonderful.

Poppy St. James sweeps you off your feat with swooning and sweetness! Second Chance Summer had so many chances. And to add the cherry on top, the ending just added that fluffy feeling to your heart! Such a heartwarming, wonderful story!

She ends up seated across from a most arrogant man that drives her crazy, but finds herself somehow attracted to him at the same time. He is unpolished and rough around the edges in comparison to the sophisticated men in her circle back in New York, and she finds him refreshing. He is honest and direct, something she isn’t used to.
When Luke sees the newbie enter the restaurant, he knows it is bad news. The city girl sticks out like a sore thumb, attracting everyone’s attention. She is exactly his type, but he isn’t about to make that mistake again. When she ends up seated across from him, he cannot help but speak up when he finds her ungrateful. She is clearly agitated, and he pushes her right back. The tension between them is thick. He is determined not to get involved, no matter how tempted he might become. The couple eventually earns a happy ending.

There is plenty of romantic tension as the pair fights their blossoming feelings for one another while Charlotte’s car is stuck in the repair shop. Charlotte is like a fish out of water, and she is also Luke’s poison. He is familiar with women who leave the small town behind for the big city, and he has had enough of heartbreak to know it is best to avoid it. Charlotte is clearly running from something, but he never pushes. It doesn’t matter since she is leaving. She considers telling him, but again, she is leaving so it doesn’t really matter. Their attraction to one another is too strong to deny, so the pair falls into a flirtatious relationship – something safe and not too serious. They agree to enjoy the limited time that they have together. This opens the door to really getting to know one another. During her stay, Charlotte begins to meet the locals. She learns about Wilder Whiskey and gets excited about sharing her ideas with Luke. As the days go by, they each begin to realize that heartbreak is not avoidable. She is leaving, and he will be left behind.

The plot is fairly simple. The characters are complex and real. Charlotte’s relationship with her ex, though, does not feel realistic. It is a little hard to believe things had gotten serious given how empty it was. There hadn’t been a scheme or other sufficient explanation for their situation falling into place as it so conveniently had. Her motivations were sort of okay, but his actions (or lack thereof) don’t add up. The story is written in first person. The POV alternates between Luke and Charlotte. I rate this book four stars.

SECOND CHANCE SUMMER by Poppy St. James is a warm, engaging story about a girl from New York trying to escape an unwanted marriage and a boy from Shady Grove TX needing a fresh chance at love. Charlotte Freemont runs away from her wedding right before going down the aisle. She's heading to L.A. to live with her best friend Valentina, but her Audi breaks down in Shady Grove TX on a Sunday, meaning no mechanic’s on the job. Luke Wilder's been left before, first by his mom when he was little, and then by his last girlfriend, so he's not too interested in getting involved with the woman whose busted car dropped her in his hometown. She's just going to leave when her car gets fixed anyway. Besides he thinks she's a snob and she things he's arrogant, so why bother?
PROS:
1. The main characters are interesting and likeable, and they each work through problems, such as trusting in others, believing in yourself, and making your own choices, and grow throughout the story.
2. The supporting cast is fairly unique and fun, particularly the petite and goth-like stylist Audrey, who gives Charlotte a more positive view of Luke, making Charlotte reconsider her initial opinion of him.
3. The book moves along at a good pace. A lot happens within a couple of weeks, but it’s enough time for Charlotte and Luke to develop trust and enjoy being with each other.
4. The story’s told in first person, past tense, and the chapters alternate between Luke’s POV and Charlotte’s POV.
5. The wonderful cover reflects the tone of the story and pulled me in right away.
6. The author’s name. Seriously, it’s awesome! That alone made me want to check the book out. And her style of writing ensures I’ll want to read her future stories.
CONS:
1. A lot happens within a couple of weeks. I’m not the biggest fan of insta-love or quick love, but I can suspend belief for a good, fun story (like I think this is).
2. The ending (before the Epilogue) seems a little rushed. A meatier ending would have been more satisfying to me.
SUMMARY:
SECOND CHANCE SUMMER is a lighthearted, quick story and perfect as a beach read. The main characters and supporting cast are well-written and likeable, and they tackle themes of trust in others, self-confidence, and freedom to make your own decisions. I would definitely recommend this story to others, particularly those who like character-driven stories, and look forward to reading more books by Poppy St. James.

2. The supporting cast is fairly unique and fun, particularly the petite and goth-like stylist Audrey, who gives Charlotte a more positive view of Luke, making Charlotte reconsider her initial opinion of him.
3. The book moves along at a good pace. A lot happens within a couple of weeks, but it’s enough time for Charlotte and Luke to develop trust and enjoy being with each other.
4. The story’s told in first person, past tense, and the chapters alternate between Luke’s POV and Charlotte’s POV.
5. The wonderful cover reflects the tone of the story and pulled me in right away.
6. The author’s name. Seriously, it’s awesome! That alone made me want to check the book out. And her style of writing ensures I’ll want to read her future stories.
CONS:
1. A lot happens within a couple of weeks. I’m not the biggest fan of insta-love or quick love, but I can suspend belief for a good, fun story (like I think this is).
2. The ending (before the Epilogue) seems a little rushed. A meatier ending would have been more satisfying to me.
SUMMARY:
SECOND CHANCE SUMMER is a lighthearted, quick story and perfect as a beach read. The main characters and supporting cast are well-written and likeable, and they tackle themes of trust in others, self-confidence, and freedom to make your own decisions. I would definitely recommend this story to others, particularly those who like character-driven stories, and look forward to reading more books by Poppy St. James.

After reading previous works by this author but under a different name, I was excited to see how this book would turn out considering this is a different style to her usual writing. However, after giving this a read I have to say I was left a little disappointed as it just seemed like it was a little too fast paced, you was left with wondering about a few things. I understand that Poppy St. James wrote from the heart, but to me and I already know that a lot of people won’t agree with me for this, but I honestly think that maybe Sweet Romance isn’t exactly for her. I’m not saying that her writing is bad, it’s just that it’s clear that there needs to be a little more thought into what’s written.
I’m happy to keep reading her work as honestly she may end up improving over time with each book.
I thought Luke was a great guy, he wanted to succeed and make a name for his family, yet whilst he thought he had everything it’s clear that Charlotte has clearly impacted his life a lot. I know he’s scared about being hurt again because so far all the women other than his sister have walked out on him even though he asked them to stay. So I can understand why he’s hesitant.
Charlotte on the other hand, I thought she was an interesting character, she comes off as spoiled, but then you can see that she changes and starts to adapt to how life is where she is stranded.
Overall though, I do think it was a good effort from Poppy, but had it not been for a couple of things, then this would have been amazing to me.
I honestly have no idea what’s next for this author in terms of this genre but I know that I’ll be looking forward to it and hopefully seeing if she can impress me.

Such a heartwarming story. Luke has had his heart broken previously when he ex just left him, so when a new comer, Charlotte, sweeps into town when her car breaks down, Luke knows he has to protect himself. Charlotte has left her family and fiancée behind, she doesn’t want that life and was never with her fiancée for love. She ends up in a small town called Shady Grove where life is completely different from anything she has experienced. After initially having a run in with Luke, she sees a completely different side to him that she can’t help but fall for, however she knows she has to leave once her car is fixed. Luke feels the connection with Charlotte but he has to protect his heart. After spending a week together both Luke and Charlotte are struggling to hide their feelings but when Charlotte asks Luke to ask her to stay with him he refuses, he believes he shouldn’t have to ask her she should want to stay herself. Believing there is nothing for her to stay for in the town Charlotte leaves, leaving a heart broken Luke behind however he very quickly realises the mistake he made, he just needs to find Charlotte and tell her. A really heartwarming story. Loved the humour in the book, the characters were fantastic with an amazing connection between them. My first time reading a novel by the author and I have to say I really enjoyed it, looking forward to reading more.

4,5 stars. I loved this book! It was a swoon-worthy feel good romance.
This book is about Charlotte and Luke. Charlotte left her fiancé at the altar and escaped New York to go to Los Angeles to stay with her friend. Her car broke down half way down her road trip and she is stranded in a small town in Texas. There she meets Luke and his family who own a whiskey distillery. They have a bumpy start with a lot of assumptions, but love blossoms when they start getting to know each other. You can’t help but fall in love with this hero, all the people of Shady Grove and the small town setting. Both hurt in the past they guarded their hearts, but was this a wise thing to do? A beautiful heartwarming story with a HEA.
I did notice some errors in this book, especially in chapter 7. Luke says that Charlotte told him about her marketing degree from Yale. When did she mention this? We never got to read this part. Later in this chapter a similar error. Earlier in the book Luke only thought about telling her about a guy he knows in Austin who could install the part for her car. Charlotte then refers to this later. He never told her about this, so she couldn’t have known. It didn’t bother me much, but it did confuse me and I am surprised an editor didn’t pick up on this.
Safe read. Hero not a manwhore. No OW/OM drama. No sex scenes at all.

I absolutely loved this change of pace from Kendall and devoured the book in one sitting pretty much.
Charlotte has grown up with a rich entitled family where females are placed on the back burner. But Charlotte is a very driven young women who is struggling to gain the attention of her father. After finally experiencing enough of this heartache she fleas her home town to explore her new life living with a friend. But on the way she runs into some car trouble in a small country town and gets stuck there for longer than she would have liked.
Enter Luke Wilder! Luke has also given up on the search for love after his own heartaches in the past. Upon their first meeting she finds him frustrating and quite arrogant. But as time goes on does Charlotte actually find herself seeing the charm in him and becoming oddly comfortable in this small town of locals.
The books is such a heartwarming, swoon worthy romance. A big change compared to Kendalls other books, but I really enjoyed her new pen name.
The end did wrap up a bit fast for me as I would have loved just a few more chapters to delve into the end. Can't wait to see another from Poppy!

A beautifully sweet, small town romance! Charlotte Freemont left behind her life in NY to start over in LA. Along the drive, her car breaks down in Shady Grove, Texas. Was she in for a rude awakening! Small town life moves at a much slower pace than big city NY so getting her car fixed pronto wasn't going to happen. From the moment Luke Wilder sets his eyes on Charlotte, he saw nothing but privilege and irritation. Whenever they spoke to each other it was full of animosity. But once they discovered they could be mutually beneficial to each other, the gloves came off and a friendship bloomed. And so did their feelings for one another. Thinking that Charlotte will hurt him the same way his ex did, Luke lets her go. What he didn't count on was how much he missed her and thinking he made the biggest mistake ever.
This is a clean, sweet romance with no hot and heavy action. The characters and storyline are realistic and relatable. Can't wait to see what else the author has in store for her sweet, but not too sugary sweet romances!

Charlotte was 'running' away from New York and she walked out on her wedding day. Now her car has broken down in a small town and she definitely doesn't fit in. But when she meets Luke Wilder maybe being stuck in this town isn't so bad. Although it doesn't seem like he likes her too much...

Cute, sweet story. I loved Luke and his twin brother Duke. (lol) Charlotte annoyed me a bit. I understood why Luke didn't ask her to stay, I agreed with him that she needed to not just stay for him but she needed to stay on her own. I loved the whole small town story though. All in all a good read.
The narrators were my favorite too. I love Joe Arden and he was perfect for Luke and Emma Wilder was perfect for Charlotte

Poppy St. James is a new author you want to get your hands on right now. Here is an author who brings the romance to life and in a time where it seems to have been misplaced to certain people. Charlotte has never had a say in her life and now that she is ready life has a way of well detouring her. Now Luke is a simple guy who just wants to be loved for who he is and not what he can bring. Two people opposite from each other yet similar in many ways. This was supposed to be the summer where Charlottle finally gets a life but with a good man like Luke she is seeing an adventure she never expected. Poppy St. James is definitely bringing real love back in a sweet way that just makes these two so loveable even through the bickering lol. Loved it.

If you are looking for some light, breezy, feel- good, wholesome romantic story, then Second Chance Summer by Poppy St. James is definitely the book for you. This book is about the story of Charlotte and Luke - two people who have some emotional baggage because of their parents and their past, and are struggling to overcome it.
Both have their own stuff to work out and are struggling to find themselves. Fate crosses their paths and their journey to each other after that is the story. I felt the story was told in a really engaging, sweet and heart- warming way. This author is a wonderful find for me and I am definitely going to look forward to reading more of her works. Thanks to the author for such a feel- good story.

Charlotte is stopping by on her way through town through no choice of her own but she finds herself endeared to stay. She is not one of those characters who I deem to be ‘too posh for a small town’. She definitely has more depth to her than a lot of other characters, I find it quite interesting that she does not see herself as someone worthy of being loved by Luke.
Luke. I like him but I find him so annoyingly frustrating. It is one of those things where I want to shake some sense into him – and there is also this feeling of annoyance when it comes to how he characterises and puts Charlotte in a box.
These two do have their moments – and they also have a tendency to avoid the real issues but as time goes on – they realise life is too short. For a book minus the steamy parts – I did really enjoy it and definitely want to read more of these stories.

Darling! Clean feel-good country romance. I enjoyed this small-town story. Charlotte, a New York High-society girl, finds herself stranded in small town Shady Grove, Texas, when her Audi breaks down on her trip across the US. Luke is struggling to keep family’s small town distillery out of the red and in no mood to deal with the likes of the city girl passing through his town. Although they don’t initially exactly hit it off, Luke and Charlotte feel a pull towards each other. For the week that Charlotte waits for her car to be repaired, she and Luke spend more and more time together. They both know that she is leaving as soon as her car is done, but neither is willing to take the leap of faith to show their own vulnerability.
I thought it was so cute and fun and there were plenty of wistful sighs as I read this cute story.

This was a slow burn love story. The characters were well written and full of emotion and enough quirks to keep you smiling. Luke and Charlotte’s chemistry was undeniable even though the two of them played their cards pretty close to their chest. Good thing that that they either had a good friend or family to help them see what they could have, and to help them see if it was worth the risk.
I wouldn’t mind stopping in to this little town for a visit myself. The town gave off such a warm and welcoming vibe, that you just wanted to stay.
Poppy sure knows how to cram a whole load of country charm into a mighty enjoyable book.

A light, romantic small town romance
I enjoyed this book for what it was. However if you don't like a very surface level stories without build up then this is not for you.
This was a super sweet small town romance. It progresses really quickly but is also a closed door romance which I don't mind but I had a heard time figuring out where they stood or what actually occured at times.
I also felt like the confrontation with Prescott was awkward.. at first he was mad about the way Charlotte embarrassed him and then he turns around and says he'll handle everything and wants to invest in the distillery......
I really did like this story. It was lighter than my usual reads and I loved watching Charlotte find her way and stand up for herself.

Second Chance Summer had me in love with love all over again!!
Luke and Charlotte's story was a great one. They had their ups and downs. Their worlds are turned upside down. Luke with his fear of a broken heart and Charlotte with her worry of leaving the city. They seem like oil and water at first, but then we get the chemistry that builds.
This is a sweet romance that will have you drop a tear or two. I loved how everything falls into place at the end!

This was a good read. Charlotte has left her life in New York and is headed to LA when her car breaks down in a small town and she is stuck there until it’s fixed. She meets Luke right of the bat and they don’t care for each other. Luke decides that he may have been to harsh and judgmental and strikes up conversation with Charlotte later that night when he see’s her. They start spending time together know that in a week when her car is fixed she’ll be leaving. I loved all of the characters. And hope that one of them gets a story next.

I absolutely loved this debut novel from Poppy St. James . Second Chance Summer was a sweet sexy read with a little mystery thrown in. Luke and Charlotte come from two totally different worlds and are proof that opposites attract. Will they be able to get past their differences and let their relationship grow into more?
I loved the deep connection they shared from the very beginning. The secondary characters added lots of depth to the storyline. I can't wait to see what Poppy is working on next!!
