T
here is a real beauty to being raised in the Catholic Church and continuing to practice the faith from childhood through adulthood. But there is also a beauty in finding the Catholic faith as an adult and taking part in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or RCIA, process. This October, several members of our faith community will begin RCIA under the direction of Deacon Ernie Kociemba. Deacon Ernie has found that, often, people have attended Mass at our parish for years — but they’ve never been invited to become Catholic. The RCIA process is for them. Deacon Ernie wants to invite all non-Catholics — and even Catholics who want to just learn more about the faith — to enroll in RCIA. “Jesus told his followers to ‘make disciples of all

A Letter From Our Pastor
A Month to Turn to Our Lady of the Rosary
D
ay by day, our heavenly Father provides spiritual food and graces to His beloved children, nourishing us on our earthly pilgrimage. October brings us the grace of the Holy Rosary, a prayer buried deeply in the heart of the Church, as one of its most precious treasures. The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, which takes place Oct. 7, is a commemorative feast established by St. Pius V on the anniversary of the naval victory won by the Christian fleet at Lepanto. The victory was attributed to the help of the Mother of God, whose aid was invoked by praying the Rosary. This victory revealed the power of the Holy Rosary more than ever. Catholics who were open to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit took with deep resolve the Rosary as their link to God. Pope St. John Paul II, in his 2002 Apostolic Letter, Rosarium Virginis Mariae, writes: “The Church has always attributed particular efficacy to this prayer, entrusting to the Rosary... the
most difficult problems. At times when Christianity itself seemed under threat, its deliverance was attributed to the power of this prayer, and Our Lady of the Rosary was acclaimed as the one whose intercession brought salvation” (39). Thus, not merely through the Rosary, but more significantly, through the woman behind the Rosary — the glorious Mother of our Savior, Christ the Lord — a wellspring of God’s love has been discovered. Indeed, the Rosary is truly a way to discover Christ’s infinite love through the tender heart of His Mother. “With the Rosary, the Christian people sits at the school of Mary and is led to contemplate the beauty on the face of Christ and to experience the depths of his love. Through the Rosary the faithful receive abundant grace, as though from the very hands of the Mother of the Redeemer” (Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 1). A great number of saints, such as Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who had a special concern for the preservation of the Christian family, sensed that its salvation would be through the Holy Rosary. And as Pope St. John Paul II wrote, “Today I willingly entrust to the power of this prayer... the cause of peace in the world and the cause of the family” (Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 39). Our Lady of Fatima, who pleaded with families to pray the daily Rosary, would agree with him! Let us entrust everything to the Rosary along with the saints. As our hearts burn with hope, let us give to the Mother of God every concern that we bear, each cross we carry, piece by piece, worry by worry. She will be there to offer everything to our Heavenly Father, Whose care for each one of His children reaches beyond anything we could ever imagine. In Christ, Fr. Marvin Enneking Pastor

Un Mes Para Dirigirnos a Nuestra Señora del Rosario
ía tras día, nuestro Padre celestial proporciona alimento espiritual y gracias a Sus amados hijos, nutriéndonos en nuestro peregrinaje terrenal. Octubre nos trae la gracia del Santo Rosario, una oración enterrada profundamente en el corazón de la Iglesia, como uno de sus tesoros más preciados. La Fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, cual tiene lugar el 7 de Octubre, es una fiesta conmemorativa establecida por San Pío V en el aniversario de la victoria naval ganada por la flota cristiana en Lepanto. La victoria se atribuyó a la ayuda de la Madre de Dios, cuya ayuda fue invocada rezando el Rosario. Esta victoria reveló el poder del Santo Rosario más que nunca. Los católicos que estaban abiertos a las inspiraciones del Espíritu Santo tomaron con profunda determinación el Rosario como su vínculo con Dios. Bring Your Gifts to the Spotlight!
T
he word “talent” often conjures up images of stage performers in the spotlight, captivating awestruck audiences with their impeccable musical or acting skills. While these talented performers are certainly deserving of applause, the majority of the population sits hidden in the shadows, staring on in amazement while feeling over-looked — and perhaps wishing to possess such talents themselves. But even when we feel overlooked and untalented, God knows better. As Christians, we are all called to dig deep and trust that we are uniquely blessed with valuable talents and abilities, even if our talents aren’t so obvious or don’t garner applause and accolades. Along with “time” and “treasure,” “talent” is one of the “three Ts” of stewardship. Exploring our natural inclinations and preferences, especially when guided by the intricacies of our unique personalities, can unearth God-given talents. “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same spirit,” writes St. Paul in his First Letter to the Corinthians. “There are different forms of service, but the same Lord.” Some people have the gift of working peacefully with children. Equipped with patience and gentleness, they are able to guide young souls to the Lord. Yet, others shudder at the thought of a classroom full
of 5-year-olds, and instead seek the quiet solace of behind-the-scenes tasks — cleaning the church, sewing altar cloths or stuffing envelopes. Our interests and abilities are varied, and our volunteer options are endless, as we are called to give our talents back to God in loving service. Examine your heart and prayerfully discern your gifts, then direct those gifts towards serving the people of God. H. Jackson Brown, Jr., author of Life’s Little Instruction Book, once said, “Talent without discipline is like an octopus on roller skates. There’s plenty of movement, but you never know if it is going to be forwards, backwards, or sideways.” If our gifts of talent are not guided by the discipline of prayer, just like an octopus on roller skates, we will get nowhere fast! Yet, if we keep our eyes on the goal of heaven and serve the Lord with joyfulness, our efforts will produce a bountiful harvest. In the words of St. Paul to the Corinthians, “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will reap bountifully.” The next time you sit quietly in the shadows behind a glaring stage spotlight, rest assured that your talents are no less impressive in the eyes of God, and will always be “applauded” when directed to the service of His people.

Meet Parishioner Sharing Gifts and Caring for Our Parish Home
F
ifty-three years in the building and construction business meant that joining the Construction Committee for building the new church was a great fit for longtime St. Mary’s parishioner Butch Haider. “They were asking parishioners how they wanted to get involved in this process,” Butch says. “So I felt that my talents fit in with this particular project.” Being involved in the church community has been a big part of Butch’s life. He was on the School Board when his now-grown children were in school and he was on the Maintenance Committee at the old church. “It always makes a difference when you are involved,” he says. Butch was honored to be asked to serve as co-chair for the committee, along with the very talented Rick Klaphake, who has since passed away. “This is one way I can share my talents with others and for the betterment of our parish,” Butch says. “During the building process, we met with the contractors every two weeks continued on page 8

We salvaged as many items out of the old church as we were able to, having many items refurbished — the Stations of the Cross, the tabernacle, and sanctuary lamp. The rose window was salvaged and that is a highlight in the new church. We have more items saved for future projects, as well.” Now that the main project of building the church is finished, the Construction Committee is getting a new name and new duties. Now known as the Building, Grounds, and Maintenance Committee, this group is charged with taking care of and maintaining the property belonging to St. Mary’s Church. This includes overseeing the school grounds, as well. The committee now has offices in the parish. As St. Dominic Savio once said, “I want all I do, even the smallest thing, to be for the greater glory of God.” Butch sharing his God-given talents with the Building, Grounds, and Maintenance Committee is a beautiful example of how others can deepen their faith
life and share their own gifts with the community. There are so many ways to be involved in the parish! “All you have to do is look at what you are interested in and stop in or call the church offices,” Butch says. “They will get you in touch with the right people. “The opportunities are unlimited and there is always work to be done,” he adds. “We have committees for cleaning and decorating. Drawing From the Traditions of Spirituality
in Our Catholic Church I
f you knew that the person who loves you most in the world was longing to spend some time with you, would you want to meet with them? What if this person was also the only one capable of saving your soul for all eternity, not to mention blessing you abundantly on earth? It would seem ridiculous to say “no” to getting to know them just a little better, right? That being said, you may wonder how you can best go about getting to know this particular person. To do just that, as Catholics, it is important that we seek out and read things from our Catholic Christian tradition — immersing ourselves in the spiritual works of those who have found Christ in a very deep way in accordance with the Church. Indeed, there are many great saints who have flowered out of the community of believers, and we can turn to them to get to know God better. Over the centuries, the Catholic Church has been profoundly touched, enriched and enlightened by spiritual masters whose works are powerful enough to convert souls. It is also important to recognize that the spiritual traditions in the Church express many of the same ideas but in different ways, bearing witness to the ineffable, mosaic-like beauty of Catholicism. St. Benedict began the first formal monastic tradition in the western Catholic Church, basing it on the Rule of St. Benedict. To this day, Benedictine spirituality is centered around the recitation of the Liturgy of the Hours, simplicity and the appreciation of the Holy Eucharist. The Franciscan spiritual tradition began with St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi. These saints brought about the Counter-Reformation that still marks the Church with splendor today. St. Francis is widely known for his Gospel-centered living, love of poverty, devotion to Christ Crucified, and mercy for all men and
creatures. The Life of St. Francis of Assisi by St. Bonaventure, as well as The Little Flowers of St. Francis both help one to learn more about this magnificent saint. Similar to St. Francis, St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila also sparked a critical reformation within the Carmelite Order, which later influenced the entire Church in a positive way. Carmelite spirituality is a desert spirituality, which bases itself on silence, deep contemplative prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours, outstanding penance, and various traditional Catholic devotions. The Story of a Soul, which is the autobiography of renowned Carmelite St. Therese of Lisieux, the Autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila, and the works of St. John of the Cross all capture the essence of Carmelite spirituality. Furthermore, Salesian spirituality stems from the great life and work of St. Francis de Sales. The Introduction to the Devout Life is a fantastic primer for those desiring to enter more profoundly into a life of union with Christ. Ignatian spirituality is known for educating people on the discernment of spirits. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, as well as The Discernment of Spirits by Fr. Timothy Gallagher are excellent resources for learning more about this powerful spiritual tradition. Last but not least, The Fulfillment of All Desire by Ralph Martin is modern-day spiritual work that can help those who are seeking Christ, to find Him. The rich variety of spiritual traditions we have in the Catholic Church are an indication of how diverse our Church is. There are so many different ways of following Christ and praying — and to do so, we can draw from the spiritual “greats.” But of course, we must always pray in the way that God is leading us, in a way that we can truly encounter God in conversation.

Initiation are administered at Easter Vigil. The RCIA process includes several rites and rituals usually done at Sunday Mass. Deacon Ernie says RCIA is a powerful way to build a relationship with Jesus Christ, in addition to learning all about the traditions and practices of the Church. RCIA paves the way by building a life of faith on a firm foundation. “I would like you to consider joining His team of disciples in building up God’s kingdom,” Deacon Ernie says. “John 15:11 says, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.’ Come find the joy of the RCIA ministry.”
