Fraternity men and sorority women have been a long-standing tradition at the University of Kentucky since the first fraternity was established in 1893. Our community was founded on the values of scholarship, leadership, friendship and service and our members strive to live out these values each day.

Membership Benefits SCHOLARSHIP
UK’s fraternity and sorority community takes great pride in its scholastic achievement. Both the new member and the all-Greek grade point average exceed the all-university average. The Fall 2017 all-Greek cumulative GPA was a 3.30 compared to the all-university cumulative GPA of 3.19. The difference was even greater for new members who achieved a GPA of a 3.29 compared to the all-freshman average of 3.06. Chapters place great emphasis on encouraging, developing and maintaining academic progress. All groups have minimum standards for membership that serve to encourage and hold members accountable for academic success. Councils and chapters provide tutors, study programs and other incentives to promote academic improvement. Additionally, time management skills of fraternity and sorority members improve as they work to achieve their academic goals while also meeting chapter expectations.
LEADERSHIP
Membership in a fraternity or sorority offers students many opportunities to develop their leadership potential within the chapters as well as on campus. From day one members have the opportunity to grow their leadership skills through involvement with committees, event planning and leadership development programs. UK’s organizations take great pride in having members serve as role models on campus in a variety of ways. Members have served in leadership positions in campus groups including Student Government, Center for Community Outreach, NAACP, DanceBlue, Club Sports, Student Wellness Ambassadors, K Crew Leaders, College Mentors for Kids, Black Student Union, Student Activities Board, Residence Life Association, Latino Student Union and many others.
SERVICE The University of Kentucky was founded on the principle of service, and chapters support a strong tradition of service to our campus and community. Each year, members donate thousands of dollars and, more importantly, thousands of volunteer hours to various charities. While chapters focus on national philanthropies, all support local agencies as well. Each of the councils promote collective service among its member chapters. All four of the governing councils are hosting a school supply drive during the K Week FSL Block Party. Students are encouraged to participate in service from the beginning of their membership.
SOCIAL
UK’s fraternity and sorority community provides a diverse selection of social programs to its members. These programs vary from brotherhood and sisterhood events to social functions between different organizations. Friendship is a core value of fraternities and sororities, and groups work to provide events and activities that promote relationships within the chapter and in the entire fraternity and sorority community. Fraternity and sorority members are also members of the Big Blue Nation and fill the stands for Wildcat athletic teams as well as student-life events such as Crunch Brunch and campussponsored concerts. Doing things together help members bond and develop relationships within their chapter, the larger fraternity and sorority community and to UK.

Requirements These are general requirements. Chapter-specific requirements are listed in council publications.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS All participants in the intake/recruitment process must be full-time undergraduate students at the University of Kentucky. Each of the chapters requires a minimum grade point average for joining. The Interfraternity Council is the only council with a minimum academic requirement for participation in recruitment.
FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS Joining a fraternity or sorority carries a financial commitment. This financial commitment covers the cost of participation in chapter activities, dues and fees to the inter/national organization and housing costs for those groups with chapter facilities. The amount varies by chapter and each organization will have different options for payment including payment plans and scholarships. New members can expect to pay more for the first semester of membership because of national initiation fees and other one time costs.
SERVICE REQUIREMENTS Being a member of a fraternity or sorority involves giving back to the local community as well as to each chapter’s national philanthropy. Every chapter has its own service requirements for individual members that may range from completing individual service hours to attending chapter philanthropic events. Participating in these service events provides members with opportunities to get involved in the community to learn the importance of giving back to others.
HOUSING REQUIREMENT There are currently 30 IFC and Panhellenic Council chapters that have chapter houses. Living in a fraternity or sorority house is a great transition from living in the residence halls because it has many of the same benefits as the residence halls plus the opportunity to live with fraternity brothers or sorority sisters. Chapter house living usually includes sharing a room with at least one chapter member and having meals served Monday through Friday. Residents also have the convenience of living in the hub of many chapter activities. If a chapter has housing, then members are likely to be required to live in the house for at least two semesters. However, not all fraternities and sororities provide housing. Most fraternity or sorority housing corporations operate much like a landlord and must have all available spots occupied with a signed contract (and possibly a deposit). Most chapters have a house director who lives in an apartment within the house to provide security along with food, maintenance and housekeeping supervision. All chapter housing is different so this is a great topic to discuss with each organization.

HAZING STATEMENT
Policies
Fraternities and sororities were founded by students who came together as friends to create a bond and support each other academically. Their goals were intellectual, social and moral growth. Fraternities and sororities at the University of Kentucky expect their members to strive for academic achievement, demonstrate responsible citizenship, show concern for the rights and needs of others and provide leadership by promoting self- respect of others. As such, hazing in any form will not be tolerated. All new members are required to participate in university facilitated hazing prevention education at the beginning of the new member process. The University of Kentucky defines hazing as any action or situation created by a member of the university community against another member of the university community for the purpose of affiliation with a group or organization that: (a) is negligent or reckless in nature; (b) is humiliating or endangers an individual; or (c) unreasonably interferes with scholastic or employment activities. Actions and situations that may constitute hazing include, but are not limited to, the following: forced consumption of food, alcohol or drugs; paddling in any form; creation of unnecessary fatigue; personal servitude; physical and/or psychological shocks; forced wearing of apparel which is conspicuous and not normally in good

taste; degrading or humiliating games and activities; sleep or food deprivation; unreasonable exposure to the weather; kidnapping or abandonment; line-ups and berating; undue interference with academic pursuits; or expectation of participation in activities that are illegal, lewd or in violation of University policy. The University of Kentucky fraternity and sorority community opposes the misuse of alcohol and maintains that all chapters, all individual members and all guests must abide by state, local and university laws and regulations. Guidelines for social events involving alcohol are established by the University of Kentucky and prohibit students from possessing alcoholic beverages in the houses and on chapter premises. All chapters work to educate and foster a better understanding of social responsibility and alcohol education for their members.

Frequently Used Terms Advisor: An alumnus member who serves as a resource for the active chapter and liaison between the alumni and collegians.
Expansion/Extension: The process used by inter/national organizations to establish a new chapter of their organization at a university.
New Member Presentation: Presentation show for new members of NPHC or culturally-based organizations. Also called a probate.
Alumni: Members of a fraternity who have graduated. (Singular is alumnus.)
Founders Day: An event celebrated by fraternities and sororities to highlight the founding of their organization and celebrate its history. It’s not necessarily held on the day the organization was founded.
NIC: Stands for North American Interfraternity Conference and is the national governing body of a majority of the men’s fraternities.
Alumnae: Members of a sorority who have graduated. (Singular is alumna.) Badge: Also known as a pin, it is an item of jewelry given to members upon initiation. Bid: An official invitation to join a Panhellenic or IFC organization given to potential new members. Bid Day: The last day of IFC and Panhellenic recruitment where potential new members receive formal invitations to join a fraternity or sorority. Call: A yell used most commonly by NPHC and culturally-based chapters. Used to identify and greet brothers and sisters. Non-members are not permitted to use the call. Chapter: A branch of a national sorority or fraternity, established at a campus. Each will have its own name, usually designated by Greek letters. Chartering: When an establishing chapter receives official recognition from it snational office to have a chapter at a campus. Collegian/Collegiate: An initiated member of a fraternity or sorority currently in college. Formerly known as active.

IFC: The Interfraternity Council is the governing body for a large portion of the men’s fraternities. Initiate: A person who has recently learned the ritual of a fraternity or sorority and is a full member. Initiation: A ceremony where a new member becomes a full member of the organization. Initiation ceremonies are private and different for all organizations. Intake: Term for the process by which NPHC and other culturally-based organizations select candidates to become new members. Legacy: The grandchild, son, daughter, brother or sister of an initiated or alumnus/alumna member. Some organizations also include nieces, nephews or stepchildren as legacies. Line: New member class of an NPHC or culturally-based organization. Neophyte: New member of an NPHC or culturally-based organization. Also called a neo.
Culturally-based: Fraternities and sororities that include the celebration or appreciation of a particular culture. Examples include African-American and Latino organizations.
New Member: Term for a person who recently accepted a bid or invitation to membership. Some organizations refer to new members as associate members or neophytes.
Establishing Chapter: A new organization that is awaiting official rexognition from its national office to have a chapter at a campus.
New Member Class: A group of new members who join at the same time. Also referred to as a pledge class or line.

NPC: The National Panhellenic Conference is the organization that governs 26 national women’s sororities. NPHC: That National Pan-Hellenic Council is the coordinating body of the nine historically African American fraternities and sororities; also referred to as the Divine Nine. Order of Omega: An honor society for Greek members who demonstrate outstanding leadership and academic achievement. Panhellenic Council: The governing body for the Panhellenic Association sororities. Philanthropy: Service project or charity undertaken by chapters or councils on a campus, community or national level. PNM: A Potential New Member is a student interested in joining an organization. Also called an aspirant by some groups. Recruitment: The process where sororities and fraternities get new members. Potential new members have the opportunity to interact with all participating organizations and learn more about fraternity/sorority life. Special-interest: Fraternities and sororities that focus on a specific common area of interest such as culture, faith or academic major. UGC: The United Greek Council is the organization that governs the national special-interest fraternities and sororities.

United Greek Council “The United Greek Council shall promote awareness of member organizations through service, scholarship and fellowship.�
The United Greek Council at the University of Kentucky is the governing council for specialinterest and culturally-based fraternities and sororities and is the fastest growing council at the University of Kentucky. The main focus of the UGC is to support a diverse community by creating a culture of respect, inclusivity and empowerment for its organizations.

How To Join Fraternities and sororities within the United Greek Council individually coordinate their recruitment opportunities by chapter. To provide a centralized location to learn about all five organizations within UGC, the council hosts an open house event within the first few weeks of school so interested students can meet members of all UGC chapters. Traditionally, Beta Upsilon Chi Christian Fraternity and Kappa Beta Gamma Sorority host week-long recruitment periods each semester that include different events allowing potential new members to meet and get to know the active members of the group. Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, Inc. and Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. conduct intake, or recruitment, individually at different times of the year based upon the needs of the chapter. Each group will typically hold an information session in the semester in which membership intake is conducted so that interested students can learn more about chapter specific membership expectations.

The Alpha Omicron Colony of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. was founded on March 7, 2016 by 15 diverse women who sought to create an inclusive sisterhood. Theta Nu Xi is the first and only multicultural sorority on campus and in the state of Kentucky.

National Pan-Hellenic Council “The purpose of the National Pan-Hellenic Council is to initiate, discuss, coordinate, oversee and maintain programs and activities of mutual interest.� The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) at the University of Kentucky is the coordinating body of the eight active historically black fraternities and sororities. NPHC organizations were established during a time when African Americans were denied the rights of equal opportunity in society, including at colleges and universities. The organizations were founded to provide opportunities for members to support one another and their community in the pursuit of common values. Today, these organizations continue to embrace the ideals of unity, achievement and service to the community. The chapters strive to empower their members and the larger community socially, economically and politically through education and positive, intentional relationships. Through fellowship and acts of community service, everlasting bonds and friendship are inspired in every individual organization. The opportunity to experience such a genuinely rich tradition and history, while adopting an excellent legacy, makes NPHC organizations a great fit for prospective members.
How To Join
NPHC organizations take new members into their organizations through a process called membership intake. This process is organized by each chapter and includes selection of candidates, education about the organization and initiation and full membership. Students interested in joining any of the NPHC organizations must complete NPHC 101. NPHC 101 is an in-person educational program organized by the council to provide interested students with more information about each chapter, membership intake and the expectations of fraternity and sorority life at the University of Kentucky. This program is mandatory for students prior to their participation in membership intake for any NPHC organization and more information about NPHC 101 is available at www.kentuckynphc.com.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
The Epsilon Chi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was chartered April 1, 1965 by Ellis Bullock and Bradley Watkins at UK. The 330th house of Alpha, members stay true to the motto of the fraternity, “Manly deeds, scholarship and love for all mankind.” The chapter exhibits its dedication to service through Alpha League, where members work with the young men of Bryan Station Middle School, and I.M.P.A.C.T. Week, where members focus on giving back to the Lexington and campus community. The brotherhood has created strong bonds and the alumni frequently serve with them.

Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.
Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. was founded September 19, 1963 on the steps of Hurts Gymnasium at Morgan State College by twelve extraordinary men. The founders decided to create their own tradition and organization rather than join one of the existing fraternities; truly living up to the motto, “Building a tradition, not resting upon one.” The Zeta Psi chapter of Iota Phi Theta was chartered at the University of Kentucky on March 31, 2007. Since being charted, the chapter has been recognized for community service efforts, scholarship and, most recently, 2017 NPHC Annual Homecoming Step Show champions. Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. was founded upon five principles; scholarship, leadership, citizenship, fidelity and brotherhood. Although this fraternity was the last to join the NPHC, it is growing quickly with more the 30,000 brothers across the globe.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization to be founded on the campus of a historically black college. Omega Psi Phi was founded on November 17, 1911 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The founders were three Howard University undergraduates, Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman. Joining them was their faculty adviser, Dr. Ernest Everett Just. From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning “friendship is essential to the soul” the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. That phrase was selected as the motto. Manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift were adopted as the cardinal principles.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was founded on January 9, 1914 on the campus of Howard University, and the Mu Theta chapter at UK was chartered on September 16, 1980. The Mu Theta chapter promotes the founding principles of brotherhood, scholarship and service among collegiate men on the campus of the University of Kentucky. The organization is a social and service fraternity, meaning that members serve the campus community while also catering to the local community. Phi Beta Sigma is an organization that believes in the “inclusive we” for all men who exemplify its principles and want to make a change on campus. Some famous Sigmas include football player Richard Sherman, scientist George Washington Carver, actor Terrence Howard, former president Bill Clinton and revolutionary Huey P. Newton. @UK_Sigmas1914
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was the first black Greek-lettered sorority founded on the campus of Howard University on January 15, 1908. The Iota Sigma Chapter was chartered on May 9, 1975 on the University of Kentucky's campus. Alpha Kappa Alpha's mission is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life and to be of “Service to All Mankind." The Iota Sigma chapter was honored to win several awards in 2017, including the NPHC Chapter Scholastic Excellence Award for highest cumulative GPA, the NPHC Chapter Service Excellence Award for highest community service hours and the 2017 FSL Outstanding Service Event for “Smile Kits by Iota Sigma” where the chapter made care packages for the families devastated by the Tennessee wildfires.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded January 13, 1913 at Howard University by 22 college-educated women. The organization is committed to constructive development of its members and to public service with a primary focus on the black community. The Most Excellent Mu Epsilon Chapter was chartered May 9, 1975 at the University of Kentucky by 13 dynamic women. The group prides itself on sisterhood, scholarship and service and works vigorously to implement programs based upon Delta Sigma Theta’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust (economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health and political awareness and involvement) that will benefit UK’s campus and the surrounding community. Mu Epsiolon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded November 12, 1922 at Butler University by seven educators. The sorority strives to uphold the principles of scholarship, sisterhood and service. The Mu Omicron chapter was chartered at the University of Kentucky on January 18, 1992 by five mesmerizing women. Sigma Gamma Rho has a proud legacy of providing positive and proactive community leadership and support when and wherever needed as indicated by the sorority’s international slogan, “greater service, greater progress.”
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 16, 1920 at Howard University. The sorority was founded by five zealous women under the principles of scholarship, service, sisterhood and finer womanhood. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is the only sorority within the National Pan-Hellenic Council to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Interfraternity Council “The mission of the Interfraternity Council is to unite in the pursuit of scholarship, community service, character and the continued growth of the Greek system.” The Interfraternity Council is the governing body for a large portion of men’s fraternities at the University of Kentucky. IFC works with member chapters to coordinate programs and activities that benefit the members, as well as advocates for the needs of fraternities at the University of Kentucky. Joining an IFC organization is a great way to get involved on campus and continue pursuing high academic performance and service to the community.

All men interested in joining an IFC fraternity must be enrolled full time at the University of Kentucky. The minimum high school GPA for a man to participate in fraternity recruitment is a 2.7 (on a 4.0 unweighted scale, per University of Kentucky’s determination). Returning UK students and transfer students must have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA to participate in recruitment. In order to be eligible for fraternity recruitment, men should register online at www.kentuckyifc.com and pay the $25 recruitment fee at the end of the registration form. The fee increases to $35 at the start of recruitment. In order to be eligible for fraternity recruitment, the student must attend one of the information sessions offered by the IFC at the start of recruitment week and the IFC Convocation. Fraternity recruitment begins with the Main Lawn Mingle cookout and then information sessions hosted for all men interested in participating in recruitment. Recruitment continues with Meet the Chapter Nights in White Hall, where all fraternities are set up in the White Hall Classroom Building to meet potential new members. This is followed by Chapter Invite Nights, where potential new members can meet the chapters individually at fraternity houses or designated locations on campus for fraternities that are not housed. Bid Day is the last day of formal fraternity recruitment when new members are invited to join.

The Mu Iota chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity has a very strong and deep-rooted connection to the University of Kentucky. The chapter recently celebrated the 105th year since being chartered on campus. This also makes the chapter one of the longest standing Alpha Tau Omega chapters in the country. Phi Gamma Delta stands out in the community for a variety of reasons, such as the diversity in the classroom. Members are pursuing a broad spectrum of majors, from business to kinesiology. The chapter also hosts many well known events like the annual Pig Dinner, which brings together graduate and undergraduate brothers. The chapter also hosts the reigning FSL Outstanding Philanthropy Event: a charity walk hosted alongside the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention that raised over $16,000 for suicide awareness. This past semester the chapter hosted the inaugural LoveLex146 human trafficking awareness gala that raised over $8,000 to benefit those affected by human trafficking.

Sigma Nu was founded on the principles of love, honor and truth. The chapter strives to take these values to heart in every way possible. Last year, the chapter won the Dean’s Cup which is awarded to the fraternity who best exemplifies their fraternal values. In addition, membership has grown from 70 members to just under 110 members in the last two years. Sigma Nu offers a home away from home and the best way to get the most out of college.
SigEp was founded with the cardinal principles of virtue, diligence and brotherly love. The mission is “Building Balanced Men”, which is achieved through a commitment to sound mind and sound body. SigEp revolutionized the fraternity movement in 1991 by unveiling the Balanced Man Program, a concept of single-tiered membership and continuous development that begins the day a member joins. Panhellenic Council “The Panhellenic Council stands for good scholarship, for the guarding of good health, for maintenance of fine standards and for serving our college community.” The Panhellenic Council is the governing body for the 14 National Panhellenic Conference sororities and one associate member sorority at the University of Kentucky. Panhellenic’s main goals are to create community-wide standards and relationships through leadership opportunities, educational and social programming and oversee fall primary recruitment. In the past, Panhellenic events have included a Women’s Leadership Conference, Month of the Woman and a Panhellenic Unity Candlelight Ceremony. Every sorority woman belongs to the Panhellenic Association immediately upon pledging. As the largest women’s organization and the second largest student organization, Panhellenic makes a significant impact on UK’s campus with its support for philanthropy, scholarship, leadership and sisterhood. @UK_Panhellenic

FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS
Each of the Panhellenic sororities carries a financial commitment. Dues are assessed at the beginning of each semester, meaning that women will be expected to make two payments per year to her sorority. The first semester of membership tends to be the most expensive as there are often onetime initiation fees. At UK, those costs range from approximately $700 to $1,600 per semester, with the average being near $1,100 per semester. Subsequent semesters average approximately $900 per semester. Some of the chapters do offer the opportunity to live in a sorority house. The cost to live in the chapter house ranges from around $3,200 to a little more than $4,750; average in-house cost is approximately $3,900 per semester. Many Panhellenic women pay for their own dues by working throughout the school year or having a summer job. To help with financial obligations, each organization will have different payment options that may include payment plans and scholarships.

How To Join Panhellenic hosts primary recruitment week each fall after classes begin. This is the best opportunity to join because interested women will visit each of the 14 chapters as part of recruitment. In addition to primary recruitment, some Panhellenic chapters are eligible to accept new members after primary recruitment and during the spring semester during Continuous Open Bidding. Phi Sigma Rho is an associate member of the Panhellenic Council so the chapter does not participate in primary recruitment and hosts its own recruitment events.

PRIMARY RECRUITMENT
The University of Kentucky uses a fully-structured recruitment process in order to build relationships between chapter members and potential new members, discover shared interests and values among chapter members and potential new members and display the high standards held by all NPC member organizations. Primary recruitment is a values-based, mutually-selective process. Potential new members and chapter members look to find women who share common values, principles and standards. The recruitment process is designed to allow both chapters and potential new members to make choices about their best fit based on shared values. Women interested in participating in primary recruitment should register at www.uksorority.com between May 1 and August 22.
RECRUITMENT DATES
Primary recruitment in 2018 will be hosted the first two weekends of the academic year. A mandatory orientation session will be held Tuesday, August 21st. Recruitment continues with small and large group activities on August 24th. Open House rounds will be held Saturday, August 25th and Sunday, August 26th. The following weeked will include Philanthropy Rounds on August 31st and September 1st, Sisterhood Round on September 2nd, and Preference Round on September 3rd. Bid Day will be held on Tuesday, September 4th in the evening.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Participants in primary recruitment must be full-time UK students for the Fall 2018 semester. There are three ways to register for primary recruitment: online at uksorority.com and click the “recruitment” tab; in person at your “see blue.” U orientation; or by completing the registration form found on uksorority.com and mailing it to the Fraternity and Sorority Life Office with payment.
The cost to register on or before July 15 is $150; after July 15, $175; and after August 1, $225. CONTINUOUS OPEN BIDDING
Continuous Open Bidding (COB) begins after the conclusion of primary recruitment and continues throughout the academic year. COB is recommended for anyone who chooses not to participate in primary recruitment or did not join a chapter during the week. Participating sororities will contact women directly to invite them to attend their membership activities or will post information about their COB events on social media and on Panhellenic’s website. Keep in mind, women will not hear from all the sororities, because some chapters fill their chapter total during primary recruitment. Frequently Asked Questions Will joining a fraternity or sorority have a negative effect on my grades?
Actually, it’s more likely that membership in a fraternity or sorority will help improve your grades. Last fall, the all new-member average at UK was 3.29 while the UK all-freshman average was a 3.06. Why the difference? When students join a fraternity/ sorority they become part of a larger group of students who have already made it through their first year at UK. Not only does this group understand what a first-year student is facing, but it can also provide assistance in most of the courses new students will be taking. There are few other places where a student can gain access to the variety of resources that the fraternity and sorority community can offer. Ultimately, succeeding in the classroom is the student’s individual responsibility. With the broad range of resources available within the fraternity and sorority community, however, students are more likely to achieve their full academic potential.
Is hazing a traditional practice in fraternities and sororities?
The University of Kentucky has a very clear policy that hazing is prohibited on campus and it is not limited to fraternities and sororities but for any student, faculty, staff or visitor. Chapter members are educated on the dangers of such practices on an ongoing basis by both the University and the national/ international organization. Hazing, or any activity that subjects members to harassment, ridicule, intimidation, physical exhaustion or mental distress, is entirely contrary to the purposes of the fraternity and sorority community and the University of Kentucky and is not tolerated. If anyone ever thinks that they are being asked to participate in inappropriate activities, whether in a fraternity or sorority or any other student organization, the student should contact the Dean of Students Office immediately.
Are fraternities/sororities primarily social in nature, like in the movies?
That depends on your definition of “social.” The various activities of today’s fraternities and sororities include educational programs, community service events, intramural sports, alumni events, Parents’ Days, Homecoming, formals and date parties. While all of those events are “social” in some ways, there are additional benefits to participation. All fraternity and sorority chapter houses are alcohol-free facilities with exceptions only for registered alumni events. The Kentucky fraternity and sorority community prides itself on being a progressive, welcoming group.

Do I have to identify as a student of color to join a culturally-based fraternity or sorority?
No. Chapters within the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Sigma Lambda Beta, Sigma Lambda Gamma and Theta Nu Xi are open to students of all ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds. These organizations were founded by students who identify with a particular cultural background for the purpose of providing students of color with an opportunity to find support systems and encouragement in higher education. Membership in these organizations is now open to students of any background, but the groups still include an inter/national focus on initiatives that benefit their particular cultural background.
How much time is required to be a member?
Participating in any worthwhile activity always requires a time investment. The old saying “you get out of it what you’re willing to put into it” could not be more true. Most of the fraternity men and sorority women are successfully balancing academics, a part-time job and a social life alongside chapter membership. While there are definitely some mandatory commitments that are set well in advance (e.g., weekly meetings, community service projects, new member education), a student can be as involved as they choose to be. Time requirements vary from group to group depending upon how ambitious of a programming calendar the chapter has. The students who are most active and involved are usually the ones most satisfied with their decision to join a fraternity or sorority.
Which chapter is the best one?
All fraternities and sororities share the values of scholarship, leadership, service and brotherhood/sisterhood. The University of Kentucky fraternity and sorority community is very strong, and all of the chapters fulfill their duties to achieve excellence in these areas. Each chapter has its own personality, and students will know which chapter is the best fit for them in both values and personality.
What role do parents play in the fraternity and sorority community?
Parents play an important role in the fraternity and sorority community by being supportive and engaged in their son or daughter’s experience. No matter if they were never in a fraternity or sorority or still volunteer regularly with their organization, there are ways for parents to be involved and helpful to their son or daughter. The Fraternity and Sorority Life Office encourages parents to keep an open mind, and encourage their child to do the same, as the membership experience is different for every member. Chapters frequently have events for parents, regularly distribute newsletters and even have parent clubs designed to support the chapter. If parents ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Fraternity and Sorority Life Office.
