Power BI Weekly

Your free weekly newsletter, all about Power BI.

Power BI Weekly is a collation of the week's top news and articles from the Power BI ecosystem, all presented to you in one, handy newsletter.

Issue 257: 7th May 2024

A few announcements this week: we've been told about live connect for Power BI report integration with OneDrive and SharePoint (Preview) whereby reports stored in OneDrive/SharePoint that have a live connection with a Power BI semantic model can be viewed in-place within OneDrive/SharePoint (previously only supported for Import mode). Over in Fabric land, we've been told about the long awaited Semantic model refresh activity to chain your refreshes more easily in your overall orchestration pipeline, and (while not directly related to Power BI) we've also been told about the new external data sharing functionality: a new way to collaborate across Fabric tenants. You can now connect to Lakehouses, Warehouses, KQL Databases and mirrored databases stored in other orgs' tenants, and then build your own semantic models on top of these data sources!

Issue 256: 1st May 2024

No announcements this week, so we'll jump straight into the highlighted articles. Firstly, Ben Gribaudo has written a quick tip if you're using Time Values from Dataflow to Power BI via DirectLake. Chris Webb has started an insightful new series, writing about Power BI Semantic Model Memory Errors, Part 1: Model Size. Elsewhere, Reid Havens has shown the value of baked-in documentation in the video Adding Integrated Bookmark Notes in a Power BI Report, and Sandeep Pawar has described the process of Exporting Power BI Reports And Sharing With Granular Access Control In Fabric.

Issue 255: 23rd April 2024

This week we've had a few official updates. The first being that Copilot in Power BI will soon be available to more users in your organization, the main point being that it will be enabled by default as of May 20th (so ensure your tenant admin knows about this). We've also been told about the Deprecation of AutoML in Power BI using Dataflows V1 with the migration strategy being to use the equivalent feature in Fabric notebooks. Finally, we've been given the On-premises data gateway April 2024 release with new support for refreshes that take longer than an hour.

Issue 254: 16th April 2024

The Power BI April 2024 Feature Summary came out last week, including (amongst other updates) a Brand New Visual – 100% Stacked Area Chart and a cool new Metadata Scanning sample app to help catalog and report on your organization’s Fabric items. We've also been told about the new functionality to Deliver report Subscriptions to OneDrive and SharePoint (Preview), although such Subscriptions are still only possible with a capacity-backed workspace (though PPU support is coming soon apparently).
