Traditional preparation for academic librarianship does a notoriously poor job of equipping directors to handle the rigorous daily complexities of staff supervision, affirmative action/equal opportunity law, team building, diversity programming, shared governance, and the other challenges that will make or break a new director. This very readable, concise collection of essays, all from practicing academic library directors, deans, and program managers, is a survival handbook for aspiring leaders in academic libraries.The dozen essays presented here (e.g., Navigating Institutional Culture, The Art of Asking, It's Always Personal) are clearly written by folks who practice the everyday, in-the-trenches, always-exhausting brand of library leadership required for success at contemporary college and university libraries.For all the practicing academic librarians grown bleary-eyed by the flow-chart-decorated, PowerPoint-embedded, statistic-stuffed, clearly written-just-for-tenure articles found in too many library journals today, this title is a welcome breath of proverbial fresh air and highly recommended. Harris (information literacy coordinator, California State Univ., Channel Islands) has chosen 13 helpful essays on various topics for the new or existing academic library director. Drawing on real-life experience, contributing librarians deftly explore crucial concepts such as learning and maneuvering through institutional culture, building bridges, communicating with staff, collaborating, and supervising librarians who are faculty. Some of the pieces, such as "Relationships with Stakeholders," provide examples of what not to do, such as dismissing a librarian after a confrontation with a superior. New directors will find the material invaluable, as stepping on toes is all too easy. Other topics include employee law, library safety and security, the positives and negatives of shared governance in a library, and community relations. VERDICT A helpful primer on major issues likely to confront new academic library directors.
