CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) Democratic Candidate for U.S. Senate in Tennessee Phil Bredesen was on the campaign trail in Clarksville Tuesday. He visited Sango Pharmacy to speak to a group of around 40 people about lowering the cost of prescription drugs.

Bredesen said he wants to make dramatic decreases in prescription drugs.

“The idea is to recognize that the big pharmaceutical companies are selling these drugs vastly cheaper in foreign countries and yet we’re typically the biggest purchaser of those drugs,” he said.

Bredesen said the proposal would take some work because it’s something “pharmaceutical companies would hate.”

In the race for the U.S. Senate seat, Bredesen said health care is the issue he hears about most from Tennesseans, particularly access to medical care in rural areas.

“In a place like Clarksville in Montgomery County, it very often is about things like drug pricing that we’ve talked about here today. You have people who may have these high deductible plans so they’re paying a lot of money out of pocket or they may not have insurance,” Bredesen said.

Bredesen is former Governor of Tennessee and also Mayor of Nashville. He is facing Republican Candidate Marsha Blackburn in the November 6 Tennessee State General Election.
