Speaking Out Faithfully for Our Common Home

Maryland communities of faith and spirit have a powerful opportunity to speak out for our neighbors and our common home in the 2023 legislative session, which will run from January to April. Learn how your community can advocate for legislation that promotes clean air, clean water, and environmental justice. Participants will hear from issue experts about priority legislation, why it’s important for Maryland, and how, as people of faith, we can be advocates from a moral and religious perspective.

We'll discuss legislation that seeks:

  • Maryland the Beautiful Act - To preserve 30% of Maryland’s land and water by 2030. (Josh Hastings, Forever Maryland)

  • Community Solar - To make the Community Solar Pilot Program permanent, bringing accessible solar power to Marylanders and signaling Maryland's commitment to solar power. (Kristen Harbeson, Maryland League of Conservation Voters)

  • EmPOWER Reform - To ease the transition from gas appliances to electric, particularly in low-income homes, and reduce greenhouse gasses. (Jonathan Lacock-Nisly, IPL-DMV)

Meet our speakers:

Jamal Lewis of MarylandWe're thrilled to share that Maryland's own Jamal Lewis (pictured left) will be joining us to talk about how faith communities can help lead the way to an all-electric future. Jamal is the Director of Policy Partnerships & Equitable Electrification for Rewiring America, helping communities understand why and how we can be turning away from burning fossil fuels in our homes.
