Southern New Englanders woke up Tuesday to something they haven't seen much of this winter.

Snow.

Side roads in Southern New England were snow-covered, while highways were down to wet pavement. The storm also disrupted flights at Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport.

RIPTA said three bus routes were on detour Tuesday because of weather conditions: 14, 27 and 64.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said it had 1,943 pieces equipment deployed on roads and highways as of 6 a.m. A speed restriction was in place on the turnpike from the New York border to Palmer. Tandem trailers and special permit vehicles were prohibited.

Three inches of snow was reported in Somerset as of 5 a.m., while early reports in Rhode Island ranged from 1.5 inches in Providence to 4.25 inches in West Warwick.

While not expecting a blockbuster storm by regional standards, Southern New England braced for what could be the most significant snowfall of what has so far been a mild winter.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
